Can anyone help in identifying the large fly that buzzes around on the flowers of the Euphorbia candelabra in the parking lot outside the reception/office complex at Satara? It's about 3-4 times bigger than a normal fly, has an electric blue irridescent body and a orangey-red 'face'. If anyone thinks they know and needs a photo to confirm, let me have your email address and I can send you one. Thanks

Hi annie R

Is it not perhaps the blue bottle fly. Have a look at this link - or if you can e-mail me the pic i will try and see what I can do for you.

Hi Annie R

Take a look @ Bromophila caffra

They large blue flies, with a very bright red head.
Did your flies seem to almost fly in very slow motion compared to other fly species?

No, Ross, that's definitely not it. If anyone has the January issue of Getaway magazine, look at the bottom of page 77 you'll see the little guy I'm talking about, although this doesn't really show what an irridescent turquoise his body is.

Thanks to clever ross hawkins, my fly has been identified as a Regal Blowfly (Chrysomya marginalis). A very handsome fellow indeed. Thanks, ross!
Anyone who is interested can see a photo at http://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/forum/pho ... imit=last7
