The larva you photographed is definitely a moth larva and not a butterfly larva. But unfortunately I can't tell you which moth. These hairy caterpillars are normally of the family Lasciacampidae (monkey moths), but I con't even be 100% sure it is one of them.

Hi

this caterpillar reminds me of the big green one in "a bug's life"... it is about 8-10cm long... i found it on the ground when we were clearing a path over the weekend but i have no idea what tree or plant it was in before that... i live outside white river mpumalanga... the spikey things are shiny silver although they look white in the pic...
any idea what caterpillar it is and what it will turn into?

Hi Guys,

I need some help.

I took this pic recently in the Addo Park of these butterflies sitting on fresh and still wet elephant dung.
I have seen this before in the park and also outside of the park where I have seen these same butterflies sitting on cow dung and even on the damp soil where livestock have urinated or any damp soil for that matter.

I want to know what are they doing and are they able to obtain liquids and nutrients from the dung and urine?

Thanking you
Ronnie

Looks like a Cabbage White (Pieris brassicae), accidentally introduced into the Western Cape from Europe and first recorded in 1994.

Hi Arks..I am taking a bit of a guess here ....either a Geranium Bronze (Cacyreus marshalli)
or a Dickson's Geranium Bronze (cacyreus dicksoni) :D

Thanks so much for the ID help, Caracal. I googled a bit and that looks right, just too bad my pix aren't a bit clearer :(
