Sooty blue, Zizeeria knysna, has a dull violet blue upper side that can most often only be seen when captured as this butterfly almost never sits with open wings. This is the most common small blue, its wingspan being 18 - 23 mm, often seen on lawns. It is found throughout South Africa, year-round. The small blues are easily overlooked, in spite of being regulars in our gardens.
