Thank Jon, as long as I know they are harmless to us then that should be fine, I will leave them alone then.

Thank you in turn; it makes me feel really good dealing with people who take that attitude! You can reward yourself by going out occasionally and watching them at work. They can be quite entertaining.

All the best,

Jon

Yes...weird...a spider I have never seen before. I thought maybe a younger version of something else but he was fairly large and clearly visible from the road. We actually spotted him at another sighting as he was large enough to distract us with his movement.

Short answer I don't know. (<snvl> Not my fault! Don't know spiders!!! )
<Longer, face-saving ahem-lecture mode>
It is a very masculine-looking Mygalomorph! There is not enough detail for me at any rate, to identify it with confidence, and you don't say how large it was, but i guess (Note: GUESS!) it to be a member of the Barychelidae, the family of Lesser Baboon spiders.
Not dangerous. Typically less than an inch long, though it probably looks bigger!

FWIW!

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon.

Maybe its a good guess...I have NO CLUE...so its already more than I have. Size wise it was about 10-12cm long.

Wow! BK, if 10 cm was anything like accurate, you had a new record there!

Anyway, it remains a nice sighting and picture.

Cheers,
Jon

I don't think he looks so much like a Lesser Baboon spider :hmz: He looks like one of the Spurred Trapdoor Spiders (family idiopidae). The size fits as these can get very big.

Thanks Moose. Looking up images of the spider it looks very likely it could be a spurred tunnel spider. The abdomen looks slightly smaller in my sighting but Im sure this good be for a number of reasons. Thanks again for the reply.

Well, one reason for the smaller abdomen could be that it is a male. particularly a young male that has recently sloughed its skin for the last time and not yet had a meal. That could have something to do with what it was doing, wandering around. Maybe it needs to establish new digs. (Just guessing!)

Good evening,
Can anybody tell me what this spider is please. We saw it at Nkuhlu in the KNP. It is tiny (about the size of my pinkie nail). It was posted in our (me and Me Skarabee's) TR and Smitherson asked us to identify the spider. Could it be one of the jumping spiders?

I think its a lynx spider (but I certainly am no expert on spiders!). Try posting it on the Spider club of South Africa's FB page. Someone there should be able to help you.
