Hi all - I've become a decent butterflier over here (Southwestern USA), and I hope to see some good ones in SA in Sept (5-23). I'll be touring Kruger (Lataba, Satara, Croc Bridge), HluHluwe-Imfalozi, probably Addo, and a good road stretch from PE to Cape Town (which includes about 4 days in Cape Town).

Any recommendations on where to go and what to look for? Any suggestions on a good South African field guide? One of the guys at the "butterfly pavilion" in Pietermaritzburg gave me a recommendation, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Here at home, I use the Kaufman's field guide (I hope that means something to someone :) ).

Kirstenbosch Gardens are a definate stop in CT. What else?

Thanks very much-

Hi grobyak,

Very glad to hear someone else is also interested in butterflies 8)

You will find them all over South-Africa, so keep your eyes open in all those places you will be visiting.
The only problem in the national parks is that you must stay in your vehicle... so that makes it difficult to take photos of them. But it still awesome to see (and id) them!

I can really recommend:
Field Guide to Butterflies of South Africa by Steve Woodhall,
ISBN 1868727246.

Enjoy!!

I can't help with a field guide, but anything JB recommends is bound to be good. It will be wildflower season whilst you are in the Cape, so I can highly recommend both West Coast National Park, including the Postberg section that is only open in August and September, and Cape Point. Both are beautiful and best the earlier in the day that you can get there.

When visiting Cape Point, if you get there very early, it's best to head all the way south first, before the influx of tour busses only interested it ticking off their "been there, done that", and then take the various roads and loops off the main tar road, where you should see butterflies as well as plants and birds. There are also walking trails in both these parks that will get you away from the roads with more of a chance to get closer to butterflies and other small things. But you may well wish for more than 4 days in the Cape! Have a great trip!

Hi Grobyak

Here is another field guide:-
Butterflies of Southern Africa - A Field Guide
Mark Williams
ISBN 1 86812 516 5

You will always find butterflies in the KNP camps.

Enjoy!!!

Hello grobyak
In addition to the excellent recommendations above, try the following:
Ivor Migdoll's "Field Guide to the Butteflies of Southern Africa"
ISBN 0 86977 556 1
Enjoy your trip and butterfly hunting!
