Preparing for our November trip, I am wondering if there are any new apps (for ipad) that have been useful to you. I am NOT interested in the Sightings App but rather birds, mammals, trees, and maps. I would like to use the ipad for navigation maps but can not figure out which one to get...tom tom, garmin, ???. Prices range from FREE to $50. If I do a search in the App Store for "Kruger National Park", there are quite a few that look interesting but most of them don't have any reviews and might be a total waste of money. There is one called, "Kruger Map - Track your location" that looks like it would be fun - but no reviews. Another called "My Kruger Tracks" - no reviews. Has anyone used any of these? Recommendations?

I got the Sasol ebirds of the Kruger National Park.

Also curious about Kindle books that have been useful. I have several mammal books. They are ok. Got the Safari Guide which is quite nice.

Thanks!

To be honest I prefer a good old fashioned paper/book map.
One of my fave things to do in Kruger is to sit by the fire in the evening and plan my route for the morning drive.

They are available at the gates and the camp shops.

Hi

Roberts Birds has an awesome bird app for android and apple that is really great.

Have a look here. We use it and it helps a lot. We still have our books but the app is very useful.

Hi ILM - countdown has begun

We use Robert's Ebirds, and LOVE it. It is the only app we use, but we do find we need a bird book with us too. I did take a look for other apps a while back and did not see any that took my fancy. And for now, Google maps is all we use and the printed KNP map. Always buy the latest edition when we get to the park.

Check out the "e trees of Southern Africa" app as well (itunes). Seems very useful (have not really had the opportunity to use this in KNP).

I'll post a few links to this app later.

Thanks all. Will check out Roberts and etrees. Roberts is a bit pricey for the occasional visitor, but I will look at it more carefully. I like the sasol Kruger app as it only has the birds we are most likely to see in Kruger and I don't have to plow through so many other birds.

Yoda, we do always get the latest paper map which is always full of notes and scribbles, and totally falling apart by the end of the trip. One time, we rented a car that was equipped with a GPS and the ability to mark places we found surprisingly useful. We generally start in the south and travel to the north and then back south, so we cover a huge area. We marked where we saw certain things and were easily able to return. Once, we saw a HUGE rock python hanging at the top of a bush. We sat for hours watching it, thinking SOMETHING was going to come along and eat it, or take it. Next day, with the GPS we were able to return to the exact spot to see if it was still there. It was. Nothing took it or ate it. I won't tell you how many times we returned to check it out! It was so easy with the GPS. We still won't abandon the paper map.

iLM,
Ah, so you do use a good old fashioned map

I guess for me, the one place I don't want too much modern technology to encroach on me, is when I am in the bush

Hi ILM,

I have been using Gaia GPS for years now and really like it, also its free so no harm in trying.

EDIT: Oops, sorry, I see its not free anymore.

Thanks Shutterbug, that looks amazing!

BTW, the app that I am THE MOST excited about using in Kruger is the lightrac which you recommended in a photo thread. I have had more fun checking out what the sun and the moon will look like from each camp during our stay. I have all the camps marked. HUGE thanks for that one. LOVE IT!!! Would highly recommend for photographers or anyone interested in where the sun (or moon) will be at any particular moment from any spot on the map. The sun is going to set straight out from the bungalow we are hoping to get at Mopani. Verrrrrrrry cool! :gflower:

Another map app that I found (that is currently free) is called maps.me and you can download maps from all over the world. The Kruger area has maps that include bungalow numbers for some of the camps. I am loving this one as well.
