My last trip to the Kruger Park my girlfriend and I were in a small sedan and there was a herd (?) of elephants (since Kruger now known as wollypants - she is English (as in the nation)).

Anyway, these wollypants were slowly moving down the road towards us. Cars pulled up behind us and of course stopped to watch the proceedings.

The elephants continued heading towards us and one flapped it's ears at us. These creatures kept on coming and I swear they only detoured around the car a meter or so away.

As they were approaching I put the car in reverse hoping the car behind me would see this and give me a space to back away but to no avail. I was bricking myself!!

Anyway, once the herd had left the chap behind us pulled up in his big 4x4 and said 'Man - you guys are brave'.

Hah - I would have backed away if I had a space. frikken heck! No bravery there at all!!

Thinking about it now, it was probably the best thing to simply stay put. ??

How lovely to be going to Kruger in a few days. Have a great trip!
Here are a few of my memorable road blocks. The lionesses were so close that keeping my window open to take pics kept my heart in my mouth and I had these beauties entirely to myself.Image

On the way back to Shingwedzi from Pafuri this gentleman walked very very slowly in front of us for more than 4km. I kept my distance after I ventured slightly too close and he stopped dead, didn't even turn around but the message was clear - do not disturb - this is MY road and I will walk down the middle for as long as I want to. I got the message and enjoyed the sighting from a reasonable distance. BTW: in one shot it looks close - this is the wonder of a telephoto lens at work and not my getting too close.

My most memorable roadblock happened some years ago when we were in the park as day visitors and on route to exit at Croc Bridge gate.

We had left Nkhulu picnic spot and had given one of the staff from Lower Sabie a lift when some 10 kms or so from LS we came across a huge Buff herd milling about in the road, who absolutely refused to move off, then from behind us came this large Ellie Bull in musth so we were kind of sandwiched between them!

As the minutes became half an hour and then 40 minutes with quite a lot of cars all stuck there, some of them eventually drifted off the road just enough to let us squeeze past but by then we knew we were not going to make it to CB in time, so decided, like good folk to go into LS to ask advice and if they could possibly radio CB and we could be excused due to the circumstances.

Well the answer was a decided NO!
you will have to stay here for the night! What!

But we don't have a change of clothes, toiletries, food!
After much haggling, begging and pleading all they could offer was a special rate in a family bungalow.
So there we were, they even kept the shop open for a bit later so we could buy some food and toothbrushes etc.

In hindsight I would definitely do things a bit differently now!

Our forced and first stay in Lower Sabie camp and a roadblock we won't forget too easily.

KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

On the H10 earlier this year, we were blocked by a huge bull elephant in the middle of the road and eventually spent about 20 mins waiting for it to move. After the first five mins we switched off the engine and just parked off.

Next thing a beautifull serval crossed the road between us and the elephant! That was quite amazing.

Photo was taken on 20 June, 2010, not far from Lower-Sabie, on the Skukuza road.
The ellies were huge yes, and quite a large herd.
Vehicle's registration number is indeed Cape Town
CA 260 568

Here's another shot of more ellies crossing
Image

Tell us - how did it feel to be so close to those ellies

The guy in this white car wasn't so smart. He put himself in a dangerous postion (he clearly chose to drive into that gap on the wrong side of the road)... but more worrying is that all the people around him are just as ignorant. These ellies must have been very laid back!!
Have you seen KNP from the SKY yet??

Maybe not the most momorable, but a close call, and a lot of peeps waiting.

Turning around, a really peeved ellie, due to a Blue Toyota hooting at it, trying to push it off the road.

Doing 45km/h with camera clicking.

Lovely thread :D thanks Twigga

This was on Voortrekker road. My daughter and I had made a last quick drive before booking out. My daughter had just started to say that she had never experienced such an uneventful drive, when this appeared over the hill.

Image

The Voortrekker Tsotsi gang.

Image

I was driving with Moose a couple of years back at the cricket. We were at Afsaal when I received a sms from DB to say that there were Wilddog at the Kruger tablets. We left immediately with MM  that we would arrive in time for the start of their hunt.

This was the result.

Image

Possibly my favourite road block ever. I was driving back to Croc Bridge when I saw an elephant casualy crossing the road. He seemed to have all the time in the world as he blocked off a massive truck.

Image

I then realised that this was Duke.
