Hi StevieG
The road is OK between Belfast and Lydenburg. There are some potholes in Belfast and then again between Dullstroom there are also some potholes. One very bad one. I travelled this road last week. Another road to consider is to carry on with the N4 and then take the R36 This road used to be badly potholed but all the potholes have been fixed. The road is still uneven but only has one new pothole.

I am trying to confirm the best route to Sabie/ Graskop from the N4 as I read on TA (27th July) that the R540 between Belfast and Lydenburg is potholed.

But if this road has now been fixed and is okay I think I will go via the R540 from Belfast to Lydenburg, then the R37 Long Tom pass to Sabie then Graskop.

I can confirm that the potholes are still there on both sides of Lydenburg. We did that drive earlier this month, and there was no sign that repairs were occurring. As a matter of fact, we saw plenty of signs on the roads warning of potholes but no work done to reduce them.

Hi there T & H, :yaya:
yes, perfectly safe leaving from Malelane gate to Jhb.
There are extensive road works in the gorge currently but they should be finished by next year.

Hi,
I have done this drive on numerous occasions over the past few years. As have a lot of the other "mites" on the Forum.

It is a good road, and as Elsa has said, the road works in the gorge should be done by next year.

Two things I would be mindful of:
Don't speed. better not to have a cop pull you over.
And there are stretches that mine trucks use. Be aware, and don't be impatient to try and pass them. Rather arrive a few minutes later, than not at all!

Enjoy your trip.

Hello fellow forumites, first post and need some assistance.

I will be travelling from Hazyview to Durban tomorrow, which route is more advisable?

1. Hazyview > Nelspruit > Ermelo > Newcastle > ladysmith > N3

or

2. Hazyview > Nelspruit > Piet Retief > Pongola > Richards bay > N2

Consideration: Non 4x4 vehicle.

Thanks!

Hi Madracer and welcome to the Forum

I would go with route 1.

The Piet Retief road is extremely busy with lots of heavy vehicles. Not a very safe road.

Thanks JeanniR.

Will avoid the Piet Retief road.
Was also looking at another alternate,

Hazyview >Nelspruit > Carolina > Standerton > Vrede > Warden > N3

Any thought?

According to Google maps the travel time for both the routes are the same, but the Hazyview > Nelspruit > Ermelo > Newcastle > ladysmith > N3 is about 60 km further...

A friend of mine traveled to Standerton on Friday and the road was newly repaired. There were only a few potholes.

So either road should be fine.

Safe travels
