I heard from my daughter who is visiting Kruger at the moment that an elephant has attacked a car today (30/12/2013) and that injured people have been moved by heli. Still according to my daughter the elephant was shot or at least chased by a heli. It happened on a gravel road somewhere between the road from Paul Kruger gate and that from Pretoriuskop. Is there more information about this sad accident?
Thanks.

Social Media is reporting an attack that took place yesterday.
Is there any truth in this report, if so, what details are available.

Please note that isn't the official SANParks FB page. We are trying to find out but communication lines are a little strained at this time of year.

My daughter phoned me yesterday - she happened to be there shortly after the attach took place and heard from bystanders that injured people had been transferred to hospital by heli.
She also witnesed an ellie crossing the gravel road and being chased away by a heli.
I hope the people were not badly injured.
I also hope the ellie was not injured.
Best wishes to everyone!

Ouch

That looks like a serious attack. And it wasn't even a red car.

An elephant bull has been put down after it attacked a couple in the Kruger National Park on Monday, trampling their blue Volkswagen car.

The attack took place at a water hole near Pretoriuskop in the south of the park, SA National Parks spokesman Ike Phaahla said on Tuesday, a Sapa correspondent reported.

MEDIA RELEASE

ELEPHANT ATTACK AND INJURED TOURISTS

A couple tourists was injured when an elephant bull attacked their vehicle in the Kruger National Park in the afternoon of Monday 30 December 2013. The incident took place in the southern part of Kruger National Park along the N’waswitshaka Waterhole south of the Phabeni tarred road.

The elephant was walking in front of the couple’s vehicle whilst they were videoing it from behind for a period of time and it suddenly stopped, turned around and rapidly walked towards the vehicle which was stationery at that time. The elephant charged at them, attacked the vehicle and flipped it over off the road into the thick bushes.

The couple was assisted by a passing motorist and the Pretoriuskop Section Ranger was alerted of the incident who then informed the Operational Commander. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene to assist the injured couple who were airlifted to Skukuza to receive emergency medical treatment from the Skukuza Doctors. After being stabilised, they were flown to a nearby hospital in Nelspruit.

The female tourist was seriously injured by one of the elephant’s tasks which perforated and ripped open the back of her upper thigh. The male tourist suffered minor injuries.

The bull elephant was euthanized and upon inspection it was discovered to have been on musth which is probably the reason for the aggression levels were higher and the abnormal behaviour was also as result of the injury the elephant had subsequently suffered prior to the incident.

Tourists are requested to always keep a safe distance ant any animal sighting as they can be dangerous at times.

....End

Once again an animal must die because of man's stupidity!

What injury did the elephant sustain prior to the attack?

This was a very sad event and those of us who were not there cannot be too judgemental.

There is a section in the pamphlet handed out with visitors' entry permits which explains how to behave when around elephants - especially bulls in musth. Maybe these tourists didn't heed the information and were driving too close and upset the bull. We don't know, so can't make assumptions.

Maybe the bull had been involved in other incidents that we don't know about and it was decided that he was becoming too dangerous. The previous injury might also have contributed to his temper. The park staff hate having to shoot any animal and do it with heavy hearts. Although it is the animals' territory and their lives and well-being are paramount, tourists' safety, presumably, has also to be taken into account.

Hope the tourists make a full recovery.

Yes, I am sure that was all taken into account before the decision to euthanize was taken.
I really don't think they do that lightly.
What injury it had suffered before hand is not clear at this stage but hopefully more info will become available in time.
