Please note that the roadworks in the Crocodile Gorge can add up to an hour to your journey if you are unlucky. This obviously depends on time of day, amount of traffic, and whether you just miss a turn or not! The other morning I was not delayed much at all as I did not actually have to stop at either of the stop and go points...... There are currently 2 stop and go points.

These roadworks are predicted to last about a year.

At present there is one near the Mara turn-off, and another in the middle of the Gorge.

The detour via Carolina etc will miss the roadworks and one toll, but I do not know the route and have not used it.....maybe someone else can post information on that.

We will be coming from Barberton, and joining the N4 a few kms before the Toll plaza.

Then you will miss the roadworks completely!

Good to see this information posted. I was held up here an hour travelling from malelane gate to KMIA airport for flight home. I wasn't aware of these roadworks but fortunately had left plenty of time.

The alternative route I often use is the one via Baberton. It is not much longer than the N4, though because of winding roads it does take a bit longer to drive.

With the roadworks it will however now be the faster option.

Take N4.
Turn in to Machadodorp.
In town take the route to Badplaas.
Many kilometres later ... you reach a T-junction.
Turn left to Baberton (Right is Badplaas).
Follow this road for many kilometres heading over the Nel's Hoogte pass.
At the next T-junction turn right towards Baberton (Left is Nelspruit).
Drive past the entry to Baberton town and past Barberton's dump site.
At the back of town you will reach a four way stop.
Turn left towards Kaapmuiden.
Follow this road and be careful to turn right and cross the train spoor at the "Diggers retreat" pub towards Kaapmuiden.
Drive past Low's Creek.
At Kaapmuiden you will reach a T-junction with the N4 just before the Kaapmuiden toll gate.

This is a scenic route which gives you access to Malelane, Komatipoort and Crocodile bridge.

Thanks Imberbe and everyone for this information, it is so good to know these things in advance and avoid a bit of shock. I find it amazing that you can be held up for an hour, here a three minute hold up is disastrous

Might have a look at the map and seriously consider the detour, as you say might be a bit more driving but it's better to be a least moving.

Does anyone know if the roadworks are every day of the week ?? We will be driving out on a Saturday

It is a major upgrade on the road so even if they are not working the stop/go points are operational.

Thanks EJ,

Will have to re-assess closer to my trip in December.
We are at Skukuza for our first night. So may consider entering at Phabeni.

Hi,

I'm going to Biyamiti at the end of November beginning December and we were going to go in at Malelane Gate but now I'm going to have to take a different route.

Thanks for this information.

Came back from KNP yesterday. Exited at Crocodile Bridge gate and then (because of sign directing that way) took the new tar road past Ngwenya Lodge and joined the N4 at Hectorspruit (missing those roadworks).

We had two stop and goes in the Gorge but, despite warnings of 40 minute stops, were only held up for 10-15 minutes at each.

The rest of the trip was fine and the roadworks near Middleburg didn't cause any problems at all.
