Thanks for the info. Do the schools shut for the day at 12 noon or do they go back for the afternoon at say 2pm. We could take our time in the morning to avoid the school run. Pen

Pen, I'm not sure about the school closing times but I would guess about 2pm :hmz:

Well we will be doing that road on a Tuesday but I think we will chance it and just wait. Its going to take less time than driving all the way up to Hazyview and entering via Phabeni Gate. Thanks all for the help  Pen

We'll be at Lower Sabie in a couple of weeks, hooray! We have a 4:40 pm flight from KMIA, I am sitting here staring at maps, I suppose we'll be able to leave LS and take a leisurely drive to Pretoriuskop, exit at the Numbi gate and miss all the roadworks? I think we did that one year, I remember the R538 being a decent route?

When we go to LS, we will have been in Swaziland for a night so we'll pass through Komatipoort and won't have to worry about the roadworks there.

Third trip to Kruger for these Californians, worth every minute of the 23 hours of flying it takes to get there!

gigib, as far as the R538 via Numbi gate is concerned, the following information is given on the Kruger National Park home page under "Parks":

"Due to poor road conditions and repairs taking place on the R538 (between White River, Numbi Gate and Hazyview), guests are advised to avoid this road and Numbi Gate. The R40 (leading directly from White River to Hazyview) is recommended as it has recently been repaired and guests can access or exit the Park via the Phabeni or Kruger gates."

Don't know if it will still be the case when you visit the park.

I am unable to see the D286 (Mara Rd through the Krokodilpoort Nature reserve) on any map.
When traveling from Nelspruit to Malelane. will the turn-off be to the left hand side? When re-entering the N4 near Malelane, will it be easy to get onto the N4, say at a 4-way stop? We are almost on our way to Biyamiti and a year ago our journey was delayed for more than an hour at the Stop/Go points ( I think at that stage there were 2...)

Welcome to the forums!

The turning to Mara is on the right coming from Nelspruit. You will come out at the Barberton road and have to cross the N4 just before the toll gate. At the moment the queue going into the gorge is sometimes right back to the toll gate (and maybe even past it!) so it could be difficult crossing the road. I do not know how they organise for traffic going to Barberton to pass the queue either.....or even if they do.

The long waits are scheduled to stop by 14th October, after that short distances only.

ecojunkie,

Over the 2013 Festive period, the stop-and-go was suspended.
Is there any indication that they will do this again for this coming festive period??

Thank you! I also checked the www.tracn4.co.za website and they mentioned the shorter waiting periods from mid October.

Maybe you all can help.

We are driving from Swaziland/ Mlilwane to Hoedspruit via Jepppes Reef. Last time I did the trip via Josefdal and Barberton and while it was very scenic, it took forever on that washed out logging road and I swore never again.

Our intention is to stop somewhere midway and overnight. I had been thinking Skukuza would be ideal, but with the delay at Malelane Gate now I am not so sure. Then I had considered going into Pretoriaskop via Numbi gate but there are warnings against that, also. Berg-en-Dal same problem with Malelane Gate. Then I pondered Croc Bridge but kind of far out of the way. And I am trying so hard to stay in KNP because the scenery to Hoedsdpruit is much nicer and the drive more pleasant than going roundabout through Nelspruit to Hazyview. Any suggestions?
