There is only one stop go so the total time in one direction was 30-40 mins, in other words going there 30-40 mins and coming back the same You may be lucky and catch it open, we didn't

The stop is between Nelspruit and Malelane, the road between Malelane and CB is also under construction, but you can bypass it by taking the road left past Ngwenya lodge, there is a sign up showing you where to turn left off the N4, you come out between Komatipoort and CB gate, good road and no extra distance

Hi, does anyone know when these roadworks are due to finish? We are travelling in September and am wondering if we need to consider the potential delay here?

You can look at the website for the N4 - www.tracn4.co.za or email them on helpdesk@tracn4.co.za and ask them when they think the roadworks will be finished. We initally were told August 2014 but dont think that will be the case.

We went through the stop and go coming back home on 3 June - we waited about 40 min. I noticed the sign said "Average waiting time - 90min"

 Will be travelling there on Sunday. I know that there is a stop and go between Malelane and Croc Bridge and Carol g has given me good advice on the detour there.

We will be travelling the road from Carolina, Badplaas and Barberton, coming into the N4 just before Malelane.

Where exactly is this stop between Nelspruit and Malelane? Very near to Malelane?

Always better to know beforehand what is waiting :D

Thanks

The stop and go is in the "gorge" section of the road, so well on the Nelspruit side of the Nkomazi toll plaza.

:hmz:

On www dot tomtom dot com /livetrafffic/, it seems that the roadworks is between Krokodilpoort and Kaapmuiden. And delays can be from as short as 10 minutes to as long as 108 minutes (gasp!).

Has anyone tried taking the D286 through Krokodilpoort Nature Reserve to avoid the roadworks? From googlemaps streetview, it seems that this road is in good condition, albeit narrow. Likely it will involve slow travelling as it goes through a nature reserve, but slow travel is better than sitting and waiting for a 'stop' sign to turn into a 'go' sign for 108 minutes...

We used this route in December.
There was an accident near Millies in the N4, so used this alternate route.
The roads were in a good condition, though it adds 100km to the journey.
You join the N4 just before Melalane, so can do some shopping there.

Last time I exited Malelane enroute Joberg, I went via Barberton. Good roads, scenic drive and maybe 20 mins longer? Rejoined N4 at Machadodorp.

Roadworks on N4 (Nelspruit-Malelane) bad?

Unread postby EddieL » Sun Jun 22, 2014 10:54 pm

Apparently the stop/go system on the N4 is a nightmare and stoppages of up to 90 minutes can be expected. Is it really that bad? What are the alternatives? We stay at Biyamiti - perhaps enter at Numbi gate or do the detour via Barberton?

When we went to Kruger in May, we never waited longer than between 30 - 40 mins to get through, we traveled the road 4 times as we had to go to nelspruit halfway through our trip, never did we wait longer, we traveled that road on a Friday morning and afternoon which is a busy time, never had to wait for 90 mins

Some areas are single lane only through the roadworks, so the stop/go has to be 24/7
