We were lucky enough to see six cheetah on ... Wait for it ... ... ... ... The S100  a week ago. Spectacular sighting! About seven cars only and about 10 minutes.

Ohhhh and I know this is about cheetahs, but then on the same road in the riverbed were lions: four moms, two young males and nine cubs (and seven million cars - all well behaved and allowing each other opportunity to share in the sighting). :D

Operation Cheetah Hunt - Advise needed

Unread postby PietSkiet » Fri Sep 06, 2013 1:18 pm

Hi there everyone,

I am in need of some advise.

We are going one night to Biyamiti and three nights to Satara towards the end of the month. With the kids being very small we cannot go to the park much longer.

I am really looking forward to Biyamiti as this will be our first time in a Bushveld Camp. We are using this camp as our stop over for our drive into the park. From their we catch the main road via Lower Sabie all the way up to Satara.

Me and my wife have seen Cheetah in the park only once and hence we call our trip "Operation Cheetah Hunt"
Being at Satara for 3 nights it gives us 2 full days to find this magnificent creature, but where to look?
The Cheetah we did see in the park was on the S100 so that road is a given on one of the days to include brunch at N'wanetsi. When is the best time to go on this road? first thing in the morning, or should I take a small detour and hit the S100 at around 8:00am when the dust has settled.

The second morning I am also in two minds. Should I head up towards Olifants / Letaba via S90 and come back on the main road? Or should I head south via the S36 and have brunch at my personal favourite picnic spot near Lugmagdam (I forgot the name, N'hulgualuni or something) and back via Vutomi Road. This option also gives me a chance to see the elusive Sable.

Your advise on this regard will be much appreciated and be on the lookout for a trip report early October, whether we are successful or not.

Regards

Hi PietSkiet

We were at Satara Saturday, Sunday and Monday and all 3 days Cheetah were seen on both the S100 and H6.

I would suggest the H6, Gudzani Road and S100 Loop. Many Lion and also Leopard sightings on that loop over those 3 days.

Good luck and Enjoy
September - Orpen, Talamati and Satara :P

In addition to the roads/routes mentioned in above posts, the Mlondozi area also seems to produce plenty of cheetah - you can work that into your trip up from Biyamiti to Satara (and have a picnic at Mlondozi).

In general, they prefer the grassland areas, like S28 area, H10 area & H7 area, but I would go with 'latest sightings' and take LL's advice.

If you are unsuccessful, try Kgalagadi everybody sees them there.

The s28 and tar road from lower sabie to tshokwane are v good for cheetah.
S100 , tar road to olifants and tar road to orpen are all good. I have seen cheetah frequently on all these roads. Saw my only cheetah kill in Kruger on the s100 but haven't seen them there for a while. Good luck

A very warm welcome Pietskiet :gflower:

S28 has been my best Cheetah sighting spot. There were some brothers around Afsaal area for a while, but I have not heard about them for a while, so I wonder if they are still around. :hmz:

Don't get your hopes up too high. Cheetah is a bonus but probably a 50:50 in the time available and with kids. Definately worth a small detour across to the top half of the S28 on the way up to Satara.

BUT ..
I had an exceptional Cheetah (mum and 3 six-month olds) sighting at Biyamiti weir one morning on the last trip, so you never know.

The Satara area has a couple of decent long loops, so plenty to see even if Mr & Mrs Cheetah are lying down.

Agree with other replies. We had several years with no cheetah sightings but have been lucky last few trips.
All around LS and Orpen have regular reports, but also north of Letaba to the Tsenze loop has been good to us.
Good luck.

Just returned from an epic visit to KNP. Can confirm the previous advice as we saw cheetah in the area around Mlondozi dam, just off the S29 dirt road. Spent 5 hours with two of them right next to the road - how lucky can you get?! Then the following day, we saw another two cheetah about 100 meters from the Ntandanyathi hide on the S28. Some people were sitting in the hide oblivious to the action. I know..... I know.
