And in March. The ATM in the Punda store has also vanished, and none of the stores I visited in any camp would take CC, they were always offline for one reason or another.

ALWAYS a good idea to keep a bit of cash as back up. Very often the connection is not working for cards and your only option is cash. Even the ATM's dont always work so DEFINATELY keep some cash as it can be a bit of a problem if the cashier/attendant just shrugs and looks at you and says "cash only" - especially if you are about to run out of petrol!!

Just wanted to update this.

All fuel station's from Letaba and the south camps take cards. Just ask do you take cards. We used all camps for fuel with no problem and paid with card. In fact everywhere we went took cards which was great. But we did take cash just in case of power fail.

What is the best way to get SARand from a UK Visa card at Johannesburg airport?
Not a great idea I know, but maybe a better one than Satara or Skukuza?

Not 100% sure, but I would assume you can draw at an ATM on the airport. I have drawn foreign currency off my Visa at ATM's in various countries. There may be a limit however, in which case all the major banks can be found at JHB airport. Perhaps just send them an email first (ABSA, First National Bank, Nedbank)

You can use any UK credit or debit card at an ATM here. Just make sure you know the pin number, and you will need to enter the type of card too (debit/credit/savings). The cash limit is usually R3000 per transaction, but sometimes inexplicably only R2000! At the small BOB machines at restaurants etc the limit will be R500 - or whatever the shop has available at the time if less than that.

If you are coming from the UK, order cash from the Post Office on-line and they will deliver to your house. The rate is generally about the best rate you will get with lowest commission - better than Travellex at the airport.

In ZA, I would use a debit card in a cash machine and try to avoid ABSA as their charges are highest. Nedbank or FNB are better.

I usually start out with a wodge, pay for as much stuff as i can by credit card when down there, hiding my debit card away somehwere (so long as you can remember where you put it.... ) for funds top up as required.

Try to make sure you use a credit card which does not charge commission on foreign purchases......it makes a big difference!

You can withdraw money at Johannesburg Int. Airport from the Absa bank ATM in the departure hall - the maximum you can withdraw is 6000 Rand (at ATMs from other banks at the airport the maximum is 3000 to 4000 Rand, while the costs remain the same). In RSA you need cash for petrol, road tax and tips. Anything else can usually be paid by credit card.

Just remember, whenever you take cash out of a Credit Card, no matter where, you start paying interest on it immediately.

From the UK I use a comparison website - Martin Lewis's one is a good one - and compare the rates. Believe it or not Travelex often comes out on top - as long as you order it in advance and have it delivered or pick it up at the airport.

In the arrival hall and the level just above it, there you will find all the banks and or ATM to draw cash from.

Hello fellow Brit :) we got most of our rand from the post office as they do a good rate before we left. We payed for fuel and shopping with our debit card as it accepted at all stations and shops. The cash was just a stand by in case the power was out anywhere. Have a wonderful trip am  as I have wait awhile before we go again. Come back and and post a trip report for us  this keeps most of us going until our trips.

The charges we incurred for using abroad were next to nothing with Barclays.

I've read in previous posts that the ATM and credit card machines aren't always reliable in the camps. Is this still the case? Also, is there a limit that can be withdrawn from the ATMs at the airport?

Thanks for the help with these questions.
I'm trying to determine if it is necessary to purchase Rands prior to leaving the US.

Hi LeftyLynn :D

I cannot comment on the airport, but if you are going to carry a lot of cash on you, please be careful.

Let me also give a word of warning. If you leave your car, never just walk away thinking that it has been safely locked with a remote control devise. We have had a spate of car robberies by syndicates using car jamming devises. If you can, double check, or lock with a key.

I have found that in the busy season, some of the ATM's can run out of cash. Mainly the one at Letaba. Skukuza has a couple of machines and I have never run into problems there.

The central and northern Park is more problematic, as you have to rely on the shop having cash available. It is not such an issue in the southern areas. I do sometimes nip out to Hazyview, Phalaborwa, Komatiepoort or Malelane if I need extra stocks, or cash.
