Hunting for Shelley's Francolin and Coqui Francolin in KNP

Unread postby Scops » Fri Jul 12, 2013 10:18 am

Good morning everyone and happy friday

I will be in the Southern Kruger for 8 nights (BnD, Skuks and CB) next week and would love some help on finding 2 bogey birds of mine, namely Shelley's Francolin and Coqui Francolin which have eluded me over the years. :wall:

If anyone has seen them, or thinks they know what might be some good habitat for them, please let me know. Any info is welcome on these little blighters....

(ps - sorry mods if this should be in the Birding interest forum - but I think it;s Kruger specific)

cheers
Scops

I would think you could find them more or less anywhere in the park, luck and good timing being the operative word.
We have seen the Coqui a couple of times and all in the south.
Never seen the Shelley's yet.
Have you had a look through the relevant topics in the bird Forum Coqui and Shelley's where you might pick up some hints as to where others have seen them.

Good luck!

I will be moving this over to the Bird Forum shortly as I think you will find more interest and info in there.

Hi Scops,
We saw the Shelley's on our recent visit -- on the S36 between H7 and the Muzandzeni picnic spot (near Satara), I didn't crop the image so you can see bits of the habitat. We wouldn't have seen it if another car hadn't already stopped there. Very well camouflaged!!! There were 2 of them, and it was 08:50 (2 July 2013)

Hi Scops,

I have had 3 sightings of Coqui over the years. Most recently was last weekend on the very busy S106 Rabaleis Loop. Male and female with chicks.

Also seen them on the S36 near Muzandzeni picnic spot and on the S145 near Talamati Bushveld Camp.

Good luck! -

Great picture Wilmaw. I was reading in the Roberts Bird Guide of the KNP and it says about the Shelley's: "Not easy to see owing to its secretive habits , but often heard calling, especially in the early morning and late afternoon." Thanks for sharing

Heard and seen both east of Skukuza on the roads and while walking in the bush. Just keep a good lookout!
Smiling is contagious. Start an epidemic today!

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Completed over 6 years in Kruger in my caravan.

If I was normal I wouldn't be me!
