Thanks to all. I did get some great ideas and many that I wish I could adhere to but coming from the US I can't bring my own cast iron pot or meat....

We have started our don't forget list and added many things to it based on your great answers.

After eight trips this will be my first staying at three bush camps; Tamboti, Shimuwini and Sirheni. In addition staying - not for the first time - at tents in Punda Maria and a perimeter tent in Lower Sabie. I can not wait to go but unfortunately have many months to ponder the trip before boarding the plane.

Love your answers - keep them coming!
Dana

Apart from the spare teeth to cope with all that biltong during the day, and chops at the nightly braai.......an eternal sense of optimism, mixed with anticipation and anxiety about what we're going to experience, and what surprises are just around the corner! All the other stuff is paraphenalia!!

5years of Kruger trips from Cape Town and now 22 years from the UK:
1) enamel coffee/tea pot
2) the secret of a happy holiday... tea cosy
3) neighbours phone number for when we panic and think we've left one of the cats in at home.
4) extra bag for all tinned and dry foods so we dont have rustle of plastic bags when moving from one camp to next.
5) table cloth and corner weights- to keep up with all of you who do that.
good idea to start this thread

In my carry-on luggage, besides the camera and binoculars and prescription meds is a pair of earplugs and at least one complete change of clothing. The earplugs are insurance against the passenger 2 rows behind me who insists on talking loudly for the entire 16 hour flight - or the loud snorer in camp who happens to have the hut/tent right beside me. If my luggage takes a circuitous route while I take a direct one I'm cool as a cucumber while I wait for it to catch up with me.

In my checked bag, I have a bunch of kitchen stuff (i.e.)
-lots of zip-lock plastic bags - handy for freezing meat in single portion/meal sizes
-a knife (maybe 2) that actually cuts (a paring knife works well). The ones that are supplied are often a bit dull.
-small amounts of spices and a few bouillon cubes/packets. Yes, I can buy them there, but who wants to buy a full size package when you know you are only going to use a small amount?
-granola bars and/or cup-o-soup for emergencies or the last day when you're run out of food and there is no restaurant nearby
-a length of waxed-paper and/or foil. Again, who wants to buy a 50 metre roll when you only need enough to wrap up a few potatoes for the braii?
-a small container of cooking oil and some popcorn :D

I bring a water pillow that I can use on the plane instead of those little powder puffs that they supply. When changing camps, it's a great insulator when placed on top of the coolers that are in the back seat. It also comes in handy at night.

I refill any plastic bottles (soda pop bottles are perfect) and freeze them so I have ice-packs for the cooler. They don't leak, and I have ice-cold water to drink as they melt. I know our time in the park is almost up when there are more ice-packs in the cooler than food :(

I know you asked for 5 items, but these are my "must-haves".

I would have started my list with binos and camera.. only on my last trip we arrived at Paraborwa gate, I dashed to the back of the car to get my bino and camera bag... and not there :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

My bag was still perched on the dining room table back home

SO

books, lots of books.

mozzie stuff.

thermos.

coffee.

portable satellite TV and mini disk. I would hate to miss "The Kardashians". Maybe replace that with panado.

what I often leave behind is "yellow ribbon" :slap:

Besides for the usual i.e. binoculars, map, cameras etc. I always take the following:

Jaffel iron - these make the best toasted samis
Paraffin lantern - creates an awesome ambience
Head lamp - essential for at night and frees up the hands in case...
Buff - this is so versatile in that you can clean sunglasses, keep the sun off your arm, cover cameras etc.
Tupperware container - very handy for left over braai meat for snacking in the car

Love this thread. 'Only' 7 months till my next visit. Tick Tock....

I'll omit the basics such as wallet, toothbrushes etc:

1. Camera bag with all the techie things inside
2. Coffee Flask
3. Ouma Rusks (perfect start to every day when combined with nr.2 above)
4. Roberts KNP Bird Book
5. Extra long braai tongs to prevent from burning my fingers when using the short ones supplied by SANPARKS (no fault of theirs) which is to be found at the bungalows.

Oh How I wish I awake within KNP tomorrow!
