Secretary Bird Sightings

Unread postby Stproc » Sat Apr 06, 2013 1:31 pm

Hi all.

We're on our third trip to Kruger in August and we are really hoping to spot some Secretary birds this time. We will be stopping in the south and central ares of the park, can anybody suggest the more likely areas
to spot these elusive birds.

Thanks in anticipation.

Steve

Last April and then Oct, my last two times in the park, I saw Secretary Birds on the Mlondozi Loop, by the turn off to Muntshe. Both times is was a pair.

Also on the Oct trip I saw a pair alongside the road by the S137 (? no map with me here) near the turn off to Dukes Waterhole.

These were my first sightings in many years.
I look out for them specifically and would still like to get a good photo of them.
I am back in next Friday and will be looking again!

Good luck with your search!

We spend four months each year in Phalaborwa, so that means we go amost daily into the park.

We often saw Secretary's on the H9 near the Shilawuri turning, and the H14 near Shikumbu.

Good luck.

Hi Steve,
We have just come back from the Park today, and saw the Secretary Birds striding along on the Tropic of Capricorn Loop.
Enjoy your trip.

Main road north of Satara, H1-3 I think. Open bushveld / grassland areas. Seen them there at least twice that I can remember and not that long ago.

I have on numerous times found them on the Mlondozi loop area.
But like Dabchick said, the tar road from Satara to Olifants, about 10kms from Satara I know of a nesting site in a tree not far from the road. Have found them 4 years in a row there.

3 weeks ago I found one on the S28 not far from the CB entrance.

Good luck in finding them!

Hi Stproc

It seems between Satara and Olifants is good place for Secretary Birds.

We saw 1 last year August 2 days on a row. It was on the S90 gravel road near the S41 turn off.

Good luck in finding this bird

The best place is around Satara.

On the main tar road to Olifants as well as the gravel road to Timbavati Picnic spot.

Good luck with your spotting of secretary birds. :cam: :cam:

Around Timbavati picnic site (S 127)
Satara area:
S90 (almost every time in that area)
S100
and
Mlondozi picnic site area

We saw 2 secretary birds on the S90 just two days ago - the first we have ever seen in the 10 years of going to the park. Was lovely to see!

Thanks everyone or your replies. I now know where I have a better chance of seeing this enigmatic bird.

I will post my successes, or otherwise on my blog / web. Here's hoping. ;)
