We were once in Addo, Saw one car parked on the side of the road, watching 2 sleeping lions ( One male and one female ). They had big lenses with them and to get an reaction out of the male lion, ( for the selfish purpose of good photos ) they played out of their car radio ( out loud ) the sounds of another male lion calling!

Needless to say.... the male lion got so upset that he started marking he's territory. The whole day this lion was going up and down to mark he's territory.

NO NOT GOOD !! !! It really upsets them.

OK. You all say it is wrong to do so. I have no beef with that.

But hotshot birders do it, and think it is right.

There must be consistency here and it (pishing, no not phishing) should be castigated by all of you who think it is wrong to 'pish' animals.

It cannot be right in one way and wrong in another.

You cannot let the toy pom sit on your lap and not the rottweiler (the toy pom will get eaten!).

btw, I don't do it either, but I have been known to 'roar' myself.

I suppose that "roar" was not intended to attract the Brown Hyenas of Kruger

BB that is very true. If you are against it for animals then the same should apply with birds.

Maybe it chased them all away It got the attention of the lion lion in the long grass near the zebra carcass.

Exactly Phil. Whatever you aim it at gets affected in some way. Big or small, it does not matter.

You cannot be consistent and say it does not matter , it was only a bird but don't mess with a leopard....

Well I have never attempted either except when I squawk in church!!

But there is a grey area. Scientists use animal sounds to attract animals for research. The research is usually for the ultimate benefit of the animals concerned.

It IS unfair though to let a male lion think a competitor is in his territory, so that he spends all day marking and searching for the other male to fight.

Interesting topic - I once watched buffs next to the Satara fence reacting to lion & hyena sounds on loudspeaker - from the evening movie

...I was on a number of game drives (all official sunset or night drives from sanparks) where the guides immitated the animals to get them up . Twice the roars of lions (were all sleeping), one time a leopard, birds on a morning walk....

i think there is actually a rule that states "you may not cause a disturbance"...

and one that refers to playing any radio/tape/cd at a high volume.....

so besides the ethics...

the guy is breaking the rules.........

and should receive a hefty fine and get the hell out of kruger and go to badplaas for his holiday.....

Leachy I think you have said some good things to the point which are in the interest of the animals and the nature of Kruger

Surely there is no real difference between playing animal sounds or a Take That CD - both are disturbing for differing reasons!

Very true Brummie, I wonder what is the animals take on RSG, If it is anywhere close to my SO's then they will just fall into a deeper sleep
