It depends on what type of cool box you buy as to the price Samson, but a basic one shouldn't be that much.
I haven't actually bought one for many years as we have all of ours already.
You will get charcoal, firelighters and all you need for a braai in the supermarkets.

If you are going to buy perishables, than a cooler box is a must.

Samson, the first time we went we bought a soft cooler bag in the park. It has been back each time we go, we fold it up and pack it in our case with a couple of freezer packs. When we shop in Malelane we buy a bag of ice to get our stuff to our first camp (which tends to be Berg en Dal) then freeze up the packs which last after that. Can't remember prices too much, just remember the overall impression of how cheap it was.

Hi Samson
I travel by plane with 2 foldable coolers.
In Kruger use the smaller one for drinks etc
The bigger one for meat etc.

This system works fine for me
And soft (foldable coolers) are not expensive in SA

Hi
I am picking up a hire car at Hoedspruit on a Tuesday morning mid-October. We are on route to Orpen for one night followed by:

3 nights Lataba
2 Nights Shimuwini
5 nights Olifants

We are familiar with the facilities within Kruger. However, we normally come in via Phalaborwa but do no know the town of Hoedspruit. Any advice on good shopping for staples as we intend to cook for half the time/

Thank you

Sean

There is a Pick and Pay shopping centre as you come into Hoedspruit from the airport. You can get all you need there.

Samson, I have also taken a lot of advice from the mites about shopping as we are coming from Aus and self catering in the park and need cooler boxes etc. We are hoping to come into the park at croc bridge to Lower Sabie depending on road works. I have made contact with Pick N Pay in Malelane via e- mail. The manager has advised me that if I sent him a shopping list two weeks prior to arrival and they will have it ready
For us to collect on our way into the park. White River P nP also offer this service if you ask.
If you have time constraints this may be an option for you to consider.

We use PnP Malelane every year and they never disappoint, I email the list they have it ready and it takes ten minutes to pay for it and put it in the car, it comes already boxed and they even freeze all the meat for us, I can't sing their praises enough.

First time user of the forum, returning to the kruger after a great holiday last year.

I hope to leave JB 8.00hrs via. Giyani to Punda Maria gate arriving at 16.00hrs, does that sound ok?
Shopping for food and drink to take to the park - Mall off the North Polokwane looks good but can anybody tell me what the shopping is like at Giyani?

Has anybody encountered unrest, road blocks etc on this route in the past few weeks? Many thanks

The Mall is your best bet. Giyani is a very rural town - I went into the Spar and was very disappointed.

I don't know about troubles but I will be returning from Punda Maria on 25th October and will post any problems - though the situation can change from day to day/week to week.

Welcome to the forum tomboy!

Please do have a read Here for some good advice on shopping en route.

You don't say when you are leaving , I haven't heard of any unrest in the area of late but best to check just before you leave.

Hi Tomboy,

Are you leaving from the airport? Just factor the traffic through Johannesburg and Pretoria. We did the drive in about 7 hours from Lone Hill (northern suburbs). We left at 5am so avoided the worst of the traffic.

A warm welcome, Tomboy :gflower:

I agree with Hippotragus about Giyani's Mall. It would be better to shop beforehand.

Enjoy your stay.

tomboy and MM - I meant use the Mall just outside Polokwane. Giyani, to me, is not a good place to shop.

tomboy - I assume you are arriving at the airport and therefore cannot do your shopping beforehand.

I always do our shopping beforehand and pack our fridges and cool boxes the day before leaving.
