We have been to many picnic sites but our favourite is Mooiplaas, from the viewing deck, to the friendly staff to the clean toilets, we get a good "vibe" when visiting there. We don't go the Afsaal or Tshokwane any more, always full and chaotic. This year we will we going to Timbavati and Muzandzeni

I have three favourites:

In the south: Afsaal ( :naughty: yes I know it can get busy but I still love it) was the 1st picnic spot I ever visit in the Kruger

Central : Timbavati - watched a leopard in the riverbed (was brief but still very special)

North: Babalala - Was making breakfast and a cheetah hoped over the railing wandered through the picnic spot and hoped over the other side and disappeared into the bush, it was magical :D

Wow!

That would have been magical!

Yeah, Afsaal is loved by many despite being less than picturesque, but there does seem to be something special about it and I also make a point of visiting whenever I am nearby.

We have stopped at all the picnic sites at one time or another. We prefer the out of the way ones - where you feel like you are in the bush. Pafuri - Frank & the birds; Babalala - ellies, Mooiplaas - ellies & view; Makhadzi - lovely feel to the place, not too busy; Masorini - a chance to visit the historical site; Timbivati - have seen lion from the picnic site; Muzandzeni & Nhlanguleni - lovely area, usually clean, often see ellies, impies; Nwanetsi - nice look out; Mlondozi - one of our favourites - the view is wonderful and usually clean; Nkuhlu - buff pasties,

We have stopped at the separate day visitor facilities at Letaba, Skukuza and Lower Sabie. Of the three, Letaba has the nicest atmosphere with picnic sites fairly spread out. Lower Sabie does not have cooking gas.

We tend to avoid Afsaal and Tshokwane. Animals (birds & monkeys) are a real pest at Tshokwane and will take food out of your hand if you are not watching. Makes for a rushed breakfast. Nice food but will stop there only if no choice.

Difficult to pick just one.....

Wow!!! I can see why. So the monkeys are worse than anything else, very different. How close does the wild life come up??? Not enough to make you want to run I hope??? How close did the lion come to you???

At Timbavati, the bush buck stand alongside you at your picnic table. Take your eyes off them for one minute and they help themselves to Breakfast  We have also had bacon taken off our skottel at N'wanetsi, by a cheeky Yellow-Billed Kite :D and muffins taken by Monkeys at Tshokwane - all this despite having 6x teenagers keeping v-e-r-y close watch on the breakfast buffet

Animals can be very sneaky!! With all them hungry teenagers around I'm surprised the animals got away with anything!!!! Sounds like a blast.

For me (dont have acces to the North of Kruger), it would have to be Sunset dam. although there are so many people there ALWAYS, there is that odd few minutes where there is noone you you and the crocs and the hippos and the odd water monitor:) that noice of the small waves splashing down, and the slight cold breeze that travels over the dam. well it wil probably be a hell of a lot fuller than I saw it last in November now that its flooding.
