I am a recent convert to the north, but I will still restrict it to certain times of the year.

My choices are seasonal. In the very dry winter months I think Satara area is my favourite.

Croc Bridge area is my favourite area when approaching Spring and the early rains.

I love the lushness of Skukuza area in the early December period when the birds are seeking love and lust.

I enjoyed Punda, Shingwetzi area during the January peak birding period.

Feb to May, possibly anywhere south of Olifants. :hmz: although if forced to choose, it would be Tambotie/Satara.

There are some areas I enjoy all year round. I hold a very soft spot for P'kop and the surrounding roads. Its scenery is to die for and the camp has an atmosphere that talks of history.

Mattib we usually spend more time in the North of the Park because of its quietness and less traffic. Pafuri and Punda Maria are to us like paradise. The Mahonie loop near Punda is our favourite drive in the Park. The old world charm of Shingwedzi also never fails to impress us. That being said we will be spending more time in the South this year during our visit in May as the many praises for the South on this forum has persuaded us to let go of our “maybe preconceived” ideas of the so-called busy and hectic South. It will be up to us what we make of it. Meandering Mouse has through her postings convinced me last year already to visit Lower-Sabie and Lake Panic (for the first time after many visits to the Park).

The VERY best spot in Kruger is the right place at the right time.

This is a difficult topic to answer as every part of the kruger is unique and amazing. The park as a whole is such a treasure and every camp/area has different ecosystems, animals and memories for all of us!

I will try cover a few of the not mentioned areas that I love!

Pretoriuskop Camp: I love the bungalows looking out over the grass area between the pool and the camp. The rock pool is fantastic, the trees are lovely and the camp as that "old Kruger" feel. I love having a braai looking over the Impala on the veld.

Tshokwane rest stop is a lovely place for breakfast! I have been coming their for breakfast since a baby and have fond memories of swinging on the monkey vines near the river.

The area just before Satara camp where the wild palms grow always reminds me that I am approaching Satara. Satara its self always reminds me of colonial Africa and I love the night sounds, openness and the camp in gerneral!

Another fantastic drive/area is around mopani! The S50 road is so wild, no traffic and stunning! One can feel lost on this drive. It is fantastic drive to see huge elephants which always gets the blood pumping!

The deck at shingwedzi is fantastic for a beer, meal and to watch a game of rugby on the TV. Beautiful view of the river (usually elephants, buffalos).

In contary to this post, I think one of the reasons we all love kruger is the uniqueness of each camp, stop and area. I have been to Addo and it is not the same as Kruger....mainly for this reason i feel!

satara is the best for me personally!

love the open grasslands! Easy to see animals!
So many roads to drive! All of them good!
Traffic isn't bad because of the many roads around camp.
Plenty of grazers and plenty of cats!
Satara can also produce some rarer animals
saw genet, serval, African Wild Cat, side striped jackal and hunny badger recently

Mahonie loop - Punda maria.
Mphongolo loop - babalala picnic site to Shingwedzi.
kanniedood dam rosd - Shingwedzi.
Tshanga lookout - Red Rocks rd/Bateleur.
All the roads around Mopani/Tsendze. (Most underrated area in the park)

If venturing North, these would be the places that you have to go to.

1) Entering at Pafuri Gate and driving towards the Pafuri Picnic Spot for a breakfast or brunch looking for Nyala on the way
2) Punda Maria and the Mahonie Loop meeting some complaining cranky elephants on the way
3) Shingwedzi and surrounds.
4) Tropic of Capricorn Loop and Breakfast at Mopani
5) Babalala Picnic Spot

Being so far away from Kruger, I would take anywhere I could at the moment. :D

My trip in December seems such a long way still

If I was to pick just one area in Kruger, it will be the open grasslands around Satara :D
Plenty of animals, and often in the open as well
I also love the variety of routes around Satara camp!
