Compulsive finger waver here and I reckon I had about 100 per cent strike rate in the KTP recently. What a friendly place that was.

We are also wavers and get varied responses!! :D When we were younger my brother used to bob his head and say "môre" to every passing vehicle. On our recent trip we hired a Quantum and had all other Quantums flashing lights at us!! Friendly folk (mostly) in Kruger!

We still do that with those who stop or are stopped, but the 'finger' is now the friendly norm.

I think that most ppl relax in the parks and have the time and inclination to be friendly there.

Can't agree with you more... Me, a waver, always will be. Part of the trip is interacting with the folk... Same goes for sharing a "dop" with your neighbour in camp with the haredekool wood on the go....

Wonder if the people towing vans still stop at picnic spots and share a coffee?

Just returned (yesterday) from 14 days in the KNP. SO and I definitely waved most of the time, rather hysterically for the 4 YR sightings, and generally got a good reaction for all of them. Sometimes though you're so focussed on trying to find something in the bush, or you're distracted talking about the last one. Or in our case, we're still trying to figure out what that bird was, that you miss a few cars.

It's definitely not a dying breed, just needs a revival like most good things! So keep the waving going!!

I  it when people wave and greet each other in Kruger. We do. But I think the greetings are becoming less these days as people may prefer to keep to themselves :hmz: .

I first went to KNP in 1976 and EVERYBODY waved and stopped to tell you of special sightings.

These people also came and said hello outside your hut, as you were getting your braai together, and gave a helping hand occasionally when needed!!

This still happens today, but not nearly as often.
I think part of the problem is driving in the park with the air con on, and the windows up, so that people are in their own little world!!!

Also the modern world we live in sadly teaches us sometimes not to trust strangers!!

We are ever the optimists though, so we continue to wave, and can't wait to tell the next car we meet if we've had a special sighting. Often we are ignored, but sometimes it pays off, and we get a huge smile, or an enthusiastic wave back!!! Such a pleasure!!!

Very funny stuff, guys!

Still pretty much the normal old hand-waving back and forth in my latest experiences!

We still do the wave thing. :yaya: Last year we actually tried to stop someone to tell them of a leopard in a tree about 100 meters down the road. I stopped and had my hand out waving him to slow down. He looked at us as if we were idiots and drove past. I even called "whoa" at them after they past and I got the finger from them. I checked them in the rearview mirror while still parked in the road like an ape, and yip, needless to say they past right by the tree with the leopard in it. To top it, a sighting they would have had al to themselves.... :slap:

We have found that most people will wave or lift a finger if you wave first, just some look startled or react too late.
A lovely tradition and one I hope will continue for many years.

Hi everyone, we spent a lovely, relaxing weekend in the Kruger Park, but to our shock nobody greeted us  We always wave at people driving past us - just to say good morning/afternoon. We had one person greeting us first  And when we saw something amazing, we stopped cars and let them know (although not everybody cought on that you wanted to share something nice with them :| )! Let's greet each other and when we see something share it! Afterall, we are in heaven and should be happy

It's easy to miss a wave from an oncoming car depending on the light. The reflections off the oncoming windscreen can completely obscure the occupants. I'm probably thought of as unfriendly for not responding to an unseen wave at times.
