I must say, after spending a week in Kruger last week, the shops aren't too bad. You pay a little premium for the day-to-day stuff, which is fair in my books. Bread, milk, beer, fruit & veg is all fairly priced. The clothing and curios obviously are pretty steep, but in any other country you'll pay a premium too. The quality of the curios are also amazing! None of the cheap (Eastern Countries) type rubbish you find at some other tourist attractions.

My previous comment was targeted specifically at the rediculous prices at Wooden Banana. R98 for a steak, egg & chips!!!! I mean... Come On!!!

When I come to Kruger I stay for three glorious weeks. My last two trips I brought - from the States - comfortable lawn chairs because, let's face it, the wooden and plastic chairs provided at the accommodations are just not comfy enough to sit for hours writing, reading and watching the wildlife. I leave them at my last camp with a note the staff can have them. I also bring a cooler box from the States and do the same - leave it at the last camp.

I would like to lighten my load this coming trip. Does Skukuza shop offer comfy camp chairs for sale? If not, is there an easy stop between Nelspruit airport and Malelane gate - keeping in mind my time is tight?

Does Skukuza shop have good coolers?

I appreciate your help!

Dana

I am pretty sure you won't be able to buy any chairs at Skukuza, so your best bet would be to either go into Nelspruit if time allows, otherwise try the Spar or P & P in Malelane for some camping type chairs and also a cooler box.

If you are going through the Phabeni, Kruger or Numbi gate, you will be able to find these items in Hazyview. Enjoy your stay

Hi Dana,

If you are entering at Malelane gate, you could pm ecojunkie regarding the cooler box. She keeps one and ice bricks for mites to use during the stay at KNP.

The game store in Nelspruit sells camping chairs.

Have the cooler box etc...... Chairs are often on sale at Spar, have not seen any at PandP. Nelspruit is the best bet....but if time is short you should be OK in Malelane. Even Midas will have chairs for sale.

Thank you all for your advise. I think I will lighten my load and make a plan to buy these items there thanks to your great information.

Good idea, and exactly what we did. We ended up lucking into a pair of fantastic high-end camp chairs at Letaba, but they were the only two we saw in any of the shops and they were expensive. But, compared to the normal chairs at sites, they were worth every rand.

As a bonus, we left the chairs with the very kind staff of the last place we stayed in South Africa as thank you. (Not in a SANPark, so no "donation technicalities" my dear mods  )

What are the SANparks donation technicalities you speak of? I have left items on many trips at my last accommodation with a note that I had left these items, (chairs, food and sometimes even clothes) and wish the staff to have them. Is that a no-no? I thought it was a kind gesture! :gflower:

Travelstory, I do think it is a very kind gesture and will be very much appreciated. I often try to take food items that they might not be able to get where they are staying and I usually leave a note with my signature and booking number.

Maybe if the items a.are large you can check with the housekeeper.
