Animal sounds at night

Unread postby Mars » Sun Sep 28, 2008 10:21 am

I want to know what different people think of the animals you hear at night. For example when I was in lower sabie in the river view tent I could hear hyena's during the night as well as hippo's in the river.

Does these sounds scare you or do you love them ?

Also does anyone know where one can listen/download sounds like hyena etc ?

In the early hours of new year's day this year, I heard sounds like sawing of wood in Croc Bridge on the way to the loo before being the only person out of the gate at opening time. The noises were coming from animals inside the tents, and were pretty scary

We often hear the lions at Tamboti, the baboons across the river, and the scops owls calling to each other.

Animal sounds at night - what a wonderfull Africa experience . Lions far away proclaiming there teritory. Hyenas laughing and giggling at their own private jokes . Jackals calling one another in the distance . Or a Leopard coughing and sawing in the forest , with Baboons barking their nervous warnings . The "CRU Cru " call of a Scops owl.The "Good Lord deliver us " call of a Nightjar . This is all part of what makes the African bush and KRUGER in particular so very very special .

To me there are no better medicine for body, soul and mind than to sit around a campfire in the bush and listen to the real life orcestra!! it doesnt have to be a lion roaring or a leopard coughing- even a scopsowl or a nightjars tweed(or what ever sound it make) is music to my ears!!!

And then early morning just before the sun is rising again sitting around the fire with a hot steamy cup of coffee with rusks and taking in as a new day is breaking and the life of day coming active!!!

oH HOW I wish i could be there right now!!!

The Orpen are is quite impressive as far as night sounds go:

A few weeks ago I heard jackal, lion, Fiery-Necked Nightjar, African Scops Owl, Squaretailed Nightjar and Verreux's Eagle Owl simultaneously.

The best night sound I've ever heard was the roaring of two prides of lion squaring each other up on the opposite ends of the Sweni trails camp with us caught in the middle of the vocal battle.

when we were there in aug, it sounded like three prides of lions all calling from three directions two far and one close, the one morning heard a leopard calling for bout 2-3 hours, started one the one left of tam opposite side of the river, and it was like the leopard stuck in the bush all the way along the river, quite a chillin sound i must say

The night sounds of the bush are amazing and i can sit for hours just listening and taking it all in. There is nothing that is more special than sitting and listening to the sounds of the bush around the fire at night. some of my favourites are the scops owl, fiery-necked nightjar, hyena, jackal , lion, crickets and frogs. Definately one of the things i miss most about not being in kruger :(

Cannot wait to be back and hear those sounds again! the time just better pass quickly

On my first visit, in Lower Sabie I heard what I though was very loud snoring coming from the adjacent bunglow. SO had a real laugh when I told him and he had to explain it was the hippos.

Woken up one night in Tamboti by the roar of mating lions across the river. Very scary but what a sound.

And I love sitting outside the rondavel, just listening to the crackle of all the braais and the low mumour of other guests discussing the day's sightings. It's so relaxing.
