Hi there,

We will be leaving for the KNP on Saturday this week and we are planning on going in at Pafuri Gate. Does anyone know what the condition of the roads are like, heading up that way?

Hi GWGrant,

Lucky for you!

It all depends which routes you take. If you drive from joburg to polokwane that is a brilliant road similar to N4. If you go to Tzaneen from polokwane the road has recently been upgraded and is fair. From Tzaneen to Gyiani and from Gyiani to Pafuri the road is not so good.

Hope this helps!

Hi Berki

Do you have an idea how the route is from Polokwane through Louis Trichadt and then via the R525 to Pafuri

That's the route my brother (gwgrant) and I are also interested in hearing opinions on. Hopefully someone can provide some insight :)

Hi Guys,

Its about 3.5 hours driving at a decent pace with no stops. The road is fairly good when I last drove that way... its a long drive from Joburg but possible with an earlyish start.

I haven't been in at Pafuri Gate recently. A few years we were coming from Mapungubwe via Musina (Messina) and took the R525. It was a well-maintained road, but does go through some rural areas (cows, donkeys and speed limits).

I have also more recently taken the R81 from Polokwane - Giyani - Punda Maria gate. Very good road most of the way. BUT, looking at the map, I can only see very minor roads linking the Punda Maria area and Pafuri (on the outside of the Park).

If you are set on entering at Pafuri Gate, I would suggest you stay on the N1 until you reach the R525, between Makado (Louis Trichardt) and Musina (Messina) - it will be much faster, easier, driving.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of the area can reply before your trip.

Have a great time!

It takes me about 6 or 7 hours from Pretoria (Pretoria - Polokwane - Louis Trichardt - Pafuri). It's been a while since I've driven that route, but I seem to remember that the road (N1) was fine to Louis Trichardt, but thereafter the speed limit was much lower (60 or 80 km/h) and the road was littered with banana tree leaves for some distance. I don't remember any major problems with potholes, but it's been a few years...

Thanks guys.
That's what we expected, smooth going (for the most part) until Louis Trichardt, and then a little slower once on the R525.

Hi! We drove from Pafuri Gate to PTA in Feb this year. Good road! There is one place on the R525 where the road is closed because of it having been washed away. Luckily there is a detour through the village in that area. It is probably a 1-2km detour. We almost got lost in the village, but the locals were very friendly and helpful, and we got through without any problems. You should have no problems on the road. Have a great time!!!

Grant, go for it and take that route!!!, Polokwane, Machado
Wylies poort too Pafuri. A rather long drive
however a enjoyable drive.!!

I leave Johies south at 5.00 am and still manage to pitch a
cumbersome tent before sunset, in Punda,...

It's a peaceful drive. Avoid Polokwane for you will be wasting
time. Avoid entering Machado (Louis Trick) to the left though
there is a shopping mall to your right just before leaving the
town. At that stage you will be ready to enjoy lunch there.

I have done all the too's and fro's yet always rely on this route,.
for it settles my nature even long before I get there!!!

Have a good trip,...all of you!!

We drove the route via Louis Trichardt - Pafuri in Jan 2013 (before the floods). This is an easy drive.

PLEASE JUST BE WEARY, BETWEEN POLOKWANE AND LOUIS TRICHARDT THERE IS A VILLAGE WHERE THE MAX SPEED IS 60KM/H AND THERE ARE ALWAYS SPEEDCOPS. :cam:
