Over here in the UK, 4x4 vehicles have become very popular in dealing with important off-road tasks, such as taking the kids to school or trips to the supermarket. Most owners know nothing about 4x4 driving

Sounds like Sandton. But wher I live, I use the 4x4 on a just about daily basis.

Similarly here Bushwalker,

The only big 5 that most Cape Town 4x4s have seen are

Waterfront,
Canal Walk,
Longbeach Mall,
Cavendish and
Kenilworth Centre

I have driven, but never owned a 4x4. Almost all of my trips to both Kruger and the Kalahari are undertaken in a 10 year old VW Microbus, sometimes towing a trailer.

On one memorable occasion I had to tow a 4x4 out of a slippery puddle :wall: in the Kalahari Gemsbok Park (yes, it was still called that in those days) with my rear-wheel drive Microbus, with the trailer still attached. This happened under the watchful eyes of a pride of lion about 30 metres away.

Once the grateful fella had been safely removed from the puddle, he calmly asked for directions to his overnight camp (no map, no sense of direction :naughty: and clearly no 4x4 driving ability), only to find that he had to return through the hazard in order to go back the way he had come. Needless to say,we waited for him to safely navigate his way back through the puddle before continuing on our merry way.

There is another way to answer the question in this thread title....
Without a 4x4.I can't..... Block small sedans view at a lion sighting
Without a 4x4.I can't...... Go off road at a sighting to follow the big cat into the bush
Without a 4x4.I can't.......Bully other smaller vehicles out of my way
Without a 4x4.I can't...... park illegally on the pavement at the camp shops and picnic sites

Now before all the 4x4 owners go mad.... I drive a 4x4 and on other threads we are accused of all these things, none of which my SO and I do or ever intend doing. I just wonder if anyone has any others to add in this vein?

I battled to understand why the question had to be worded this way .

Makes me ask who prefers walking in Kruger instead of a virtuall wildlife experience in a vehicle ?

You are all forgetting the fact that some sedans comes out with permanent 4x4. Bakkies can switch them off if not needed.

I could do ( and DID most) any of the above - and more - in my Kalahari Ferrari.

I drove the old dirt approach road at 110, the little devil loved it. It 'swam' through the long puddles and once or twice 'floated' on the undercarriage. And being an elderly vahicle, it was able to get into the tightest next lane in front of new cars, as well as being better than Grandma's featherbed, it would take 6 adults, 4 kids, 3 hound dogs & 2 paddleskis, a few boogie boards, the 3 km to the lake & back in Betty's Bay.

Now why did I sell it? :hmz:

Kruger roads are mostly good even the gravel ones and I therefore think a 4X4 is not essential for Kruger. But then PJW made me think ….. :hmz:
