"Virtually nothing" is the answer to the question asked in this thread. However, 4x4 vehicles are very much boys toys (unless you're in an area where they are really necessary, like a desert) and the Kruger gives the chaps an ideal excuse to show off their gas-guzzlers. But you know what they say about the inverse relationship between flashy vehicles and the .. um .. 'appendage size' of their owners. I drive a very small car myself

I get about 22 to 23 km's per litre with my 4x4 in Kruger, due to some technologically advanced engineering.

Scipio, do you watch those Land Rover Defenders performing in the series "In Die Voetspore Van Die Grotes" (In the footsteps of giants..elephants) Monday evenings on KykNet? Very good program, they were in Mapondukwe and Northern Kruger in yesterdays program.
I think this is a repeat because this program was made in 2000.

Yeah, I don't get it there often enough, I drive my dad's Camry, or now his Merc when I fly in.

My fire engine loves Kgalagadi, especially the 400 metre long puddles.

BTW, bushwalker, I have had the range of modest to flash cars, but have never had to prove any 'qualifications'

Fuel consumption always improves in Kruger Scips, from all the crawling around, but I get 7-7.5 km/l usually.

So what's wrong with a 2x4? {Slightly} cheaper but the same height. OK you can't do the 4x4 trails but the low maintenance roads near Phalaborwa gate are accessible in one.

To put some perspective from a 4x4 owner Saraf. Kruger in a teeny sedan is still great. 4x4 owners have to oblige smaller vehicles by lettin them in on a sight, looking over them etc.

So yes, in a sedan, you will enjoy Kruger. The roads are cool, & you will see anything a 4x4 owner will see.

OK, not the 4x4 trails & some others, but enjoy kruger.

& those slating 4x4's on this thread,   We love out vehicles & what extras we have.

Do a trail in a 4x4 and you will quickly wish you had one. It is just so lekker!

he he he . The point is a 4x4 is just so lekker, we used to visit the parks in a Yaris and now have a Hilux 4x4 and it has opened up so many places and actvities that we could not go to or do before. And the amount of packing space we now have is awesome.

But, a sedan is fine for KNP.

Sure you haven't BB. We all believe you.

Joking aside, I can remember only one occasion when a 4x4 vehicle was permitted to drive where a 'normal' vehicle wasn't. The Shingwedzi river was in full flow (it was Dec 2001, I think) and, for a day or two, only 4x4s were allowed to drive over the causeway next to the camp. Even so, only a few brave souls risked it.

Over here in the UK, 4x4 vehicles have become very popular in dealing with important off-road tasks, such as taking the kids to school or trips to the supermarket. Most owners know nothing about 4x4 driving.

Driving a LandRover some years ago in N'gorongoro, I had to winch a group of tourists in a Toyota LandCruiser out of some thick mud. The "guide" who managed to drive them into the mud didn't have a clue about how to get out. Incredibly, he had no rope and no winch ! I won't mention any names but Abercromby and Kent - the so-called luxury holiday specialists - need to brush up on their recruitment qualifications. To cap it all, the stranded tourists didn't even bother to get out of the vehicle as I winched them out ! No problem for the Landy though
