Do you have anything special that you prepare for meals or snacks in the Kruger? We seem to always end up braai-ing, which I love but was wondering if there was anything different we could try. Personally I know that I am on holiday once we hit the road, as I always make savoury mince rolls for "padkos", one bite and I know I am on my way.

My wife has taught me something in the KNP...

DON'T ever leave the park without having a Game Pie (Wilds Pasty) with gravy and chips.

They taste divine.... A MUST HAVE...

As for the rest of the Time ... Braaivleis, salad and Koo Beans ... and on the road it's sandwiches or take aways...

Oh and not to forget ... Evenings it's Amarula with lots of ICE ... rest of the time it's CASTLE !! :lol:

About the Castle bit:
When my brother and I were in Kruger we had the rule that we were only allowed a Castle after seeing a lion.

I'm still a bit confused though, are lions the yellowish cats, or are they those large grey animals with the big drinking straw on their heads? :lol:

Does anyone know how to spell *matjontjans* properly? You know, those thick, marinated pork/beef/lamb rashers? *drool*

We always have those, roasties (the little bread squares filled with garlic & onion done on the braai), wors, etc for supper. For early mornings we have coffee & rusks, followed by brunch at about 11am with bacon, possibly more matjontjans, mushrooms, etc on a skottel at a picnic spot.

This was a cruel thread to start!!!

Best meal is breakfast cooked on an open flame. Fried eggs and crisp bacon. Most times at a small rest camp.

I agree about the wilds pie W@H!

My favourites are:

Potjiekos
Steak, eggs and chips
Bacon, fried banana, scrambled eggs and mushrooms and toast
Potbrood with a castle(without the can, bwana) as ingredient
Biltong
toast with a fried egg in the middle

On a serious note: We had a buffet at P/kop that rivalled any of the finest eateries that I've been too. About halfway through I wished I'd worn my stretch pants. You name it we ate it. Money well spent.

Waking up on a nice winter's day in the park? There's only one meal to be had. A nice warm cup of tomatoe soup and some fresh bread.

If you buying from the canteens? Pie, chips and gravy (Specially the wild game pies)!

I agree - we always take the buttermilk Ouma's. I didn't used to like the sliced variety, but they seem to have changed them now and they all have the soft crusty bit on top *yum*

Have you seen at Lower Sabie they sometimes sell Amarula from the icecream freezer? That really is great! I keep a bottle in my freezer at home now :oops: (not that I can touch it again till May when the little one arrives...)

We have several 'South African' stores here in the UK from which we can not only buy Ouma rusks but also Miele porridge (Yummy!), different varieties of biltong, sosaties, Boerewors etc....

However, my absolute favourite food when in the bush is a brunch of eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and whatever else is on offer - with toast or bread rolls, cooked with a good sprinkling of spices (aromat?) on the braai at a picnic stop after being on the road for a few hours, and finished off with a cup of strong tea.... Heaven!
