Safrica,
the route Penny has suggested is the one we use mostly.
We did try the Jeppes Reef/Mbabane route on the return of our recent trip for something different and altho considerably longer due to the mountain passes and sharp corners it was very scenic indeed.
EJ has just travelled down to the coast and she suggests avoiding the N4 near Komatipoort due to the extensive roadworks on the go there currently.
If I remember correctly she used a road turning off the N4 around Hectorspruit and coming out near the Mananga Border thereby avoiding the roadworks and she said it was a good road, but I don't know that one at all myself?

Please could someone help with the best route from Durban to Crocodile Bridge. It appears shorter to go through Swaziland, but what are the roads like? Advice please

Thanks
Lesley

Definitely shorter, the roads are generally not bad except for a +- 38 km stretch from the turn off after Big Bend to Siteki where there are quite bad potholes but with careful and slower driving it can be easily navigated.

I went via Swaziland in December - the Big Bend to Siteki section is not much fun in a sedan - I found myself lurching from pothole to pothole for +-38 kms :D

Also found the stop and go section near Komatipoort a pain on the way back (early January) - we got held up for about 20 minutes and I ended up with a puncture from this section of the road (some potholes there, too).

Hopefully the roads will be sorted by the time I next visit KNP.

Dee

We did the Crocodile bridge-Swaziland route to Natal in July.

It was ok, like Elsa and Deedub gave said watch the pothole part.
We had a long stop and go at Komatipoort too, had to wait for a long time before turning to Swaziland border but that was in July, don't know the actual situation.

It saves lots of time going through Swaziland instead of making the big detour around it.

Which day in the week and the moment(time) that you pass the border can make a big difference in waiting time at the customs.

We have just returned from Kruger via Swaziland. The MR8 in Swaziland which is the road to and from Siteki has VERY bad potholes - you have got to reduce speed radically in this section which is more or less 40 klms but the rest of the roads in Swaziland are absolutely fine. There are 4 Stop and Go delays on the road between the Mananga Border post and the turning to Komatipoort. These had a major impact on us on our way up to the Park as we hit them on a Wed at lunch time - the waits at each were approximately 20 mins to half an hour. On our return we decided to rather leave very early on the Friday morning and our waiting time at each of them was less than 10 mins. I do not see work going on at any lightning fast rate so you might be better off taking the short cut and leaving by the other border post that brings you out closer to Malelane and Hectorspruit.

Thanks for those details!
I wonder if the stop/go areas will be in use over weekends or only Monday to Fridays ?

We travelled on a public holiday (26 December) and back on Saturday 3 January 2014 and the stop and go areas were in use - in fact, the side of the road where they're working in each section is completely closed off.

I also forgot to mention - if you see a coach in front of you before the border, try to overtake it - or you'll be stuck at the back of a long queue when all the passengers have to go through immigration

Hello there, after scanning all of this info, I have a question about spending a night in Swaziland.

This September we will be spending a few days in KZN before heading to Lower Sabie. We will spend a couple of nights at Tembe, so it looks to be a couple of hours from there to the border at Golela. Check out at Tembe will be around 11 am so I don't want to try to go all the way to Lower Sabie. I could perhaps change my Tembe time to Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe and leave from there instead?

So, I could use some suggestions about a nice area to spend a night. So far I have looked at a couple of places around Ezulwini, Mantenga Lodge and Malandela's. Then it looks like we'd take the scenic route through Piggs Peak? I woudn't mind a more direct route to LS, but the pothole issue around Siteki seems nasty and it doesn't look like a pleasant hotel spot.

A hotel in a small game park may be fun, but I don't really think we'd have enough time.

If you have a Wild Card All Clusters then you might well want to afford yourself the opportunity of staying in Hlane which is in Swaziland.

The potholes on the stretch to Siteki are horrible...worse
than ever, you have to be patient(or have a hovercraft)...lol...

The stop go areas are not so bad,...another case for patience.

I did this route in Feb 2014, and I have to say if I am going to Kruger
nothing bothers me and my smile is a mile wide!!! :D

Bornfree :D
