I had to google arthropods  , but now that I know that :
Quote:
An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Arthropoda, and include the insects, arachnids, and crustaceans

I suspect that the quizmaster is long gone. Rose, perhaps you could consider making this an OQ quiz (with Scita's permission if that mite is still around, or with your blessings if the mite is not active) and concentrating only on arachnids and crustacenas as there already is an insect quiz?

I had changed it to an OQ and I am sure we can stick to arachnids and crustaceans in that case :)

Ok, I will have a go.

What organisms have been taken into space, exposed to the vacuum of space, and survived?

Phillip,
This experiment could well have been done on bacteria.

But the creature I am thinking of is an arthropod.

Water bears, also known as tardigrades?

Phillip, Phokojwe,

You are both correct.

Tardigades are extremophiles - organisms capable of living in challenging environmental conditions

tardigrades are the first known animal to survive in space. On September 2007, dehydrated tardigrades were taken into low Earth orbit on the FOTON-M3 mission carrying the BIOPAN astrobiology payload. For 10 days, groups of tardigrades were exposed to the hard vacuum of outer space, or vacuum and solar UV radiation. After being rehydrated back on Earth, over 68% of the subjects protected from high-energy UV radiation revived within 30 minutes following rehydration, but subsequent mortality was high; many of these produced viable embryos.

They shed their exoskeliton in order to grow. Also to grow larger they eat a lot of proteins

JeanniR and Phokojwe.

"All arthropods grow by molting; they shed their exoskeletons, expand their bodies by absorping water, and then secrete a new, larger exoskeleton into which they grow".
