Although Elephant tusks are widely known as the main source of the illegal ivory trade it is only but one source of ivory. Pigs and hippo tusks are common sources of ivory as well.

Heksie your IT,

Philip, any pigs with tusks, most domestic pig boars have tusks although not as prominent as say a warthog.

Rooies, the pigs and hippo was just an example and not the only other sources of ivory. Walrus will most definitely be on a list of ivory carrying animals.

True or False: A successful means of reducing conflict between elephants and humans is to build a barrier out of beehives?

Agree with Timepilot....True.

"It was back in 2002 when it was first found that the African Savannah Elephant seemed to be afraid of honeybees. They specifically will not feed on acacia trees which often contain beehives because of this.

The observations led to the digital playback of bee sounds and observing reactions. This led to the development of the idea that a beehive fence could be used as a way of preventing migration of elephants to agricultural areas".

Welcome back OWN.

TP, Philip, Phokojwe

Heksie, yes, electric fences are one effective way to deter elephants, but it is difficult to cover large areas, they can be difficult to maintain, and may short out easily. Beehives have increasingly been found to be highly effective and, not only can a "beehive fence" be rapidly constructed, it is also a natural way to increase the presence of bees in an area (bees in recent times have been scarce in some places). I would assume, though, that bee maintenance has its own sting in the budget? :hmz:

Over to you, TP.
