Also, in years gone by, the scarcity of Brownie sightings was compounded by the increase in prdator numbers in the Far North due to the policy of artificial water points drawing seasonally unnatural prey and predators, (read spotted hyena again) combined with the almost infinitesmally small tourist road network in the area concerned (On both sides of the border).

One factor that emerged from the discussion, which is no big secret, is that spotted hyena seem to be the brown hyena's biggest competition...

I think that that disappeared as part of the change which happened due to the introduction of huge numbers of watering points many years ago. The accompanying increase in numbers and distribution of lion and spotted hyena pushed the brownies out.

Thanks Doc

The Gemsbok, which only occurs in the drier parts of Africa is unaccustomed to big bodies of water. So, if a Gemsbok falls into a dam, with water deeper than his height, he will drown immediately because they don't know how to swim.

Of course this is a absolute nonsense. Not so long ago, a Gemsbok fled into the sea when when he was scared by tourists. He managed to swim out to safety.

The only animal that I know of that can't naturally swim (except humans) are Rhino but I might be wrong.

Fact. They also possess tear ducts, and it is for cleaning or moisturizing the eye when they've been out of the water for a while.
