Along the edges of the open mud pans are trees and shrubs, for example Terminalia prunioides, Combretum apiculatum, Jasminum stenolobum (species group 14) and Flueggea virosa (species group 21), although they occur in low abundances. Dominant grass species include Eragrostis trichophora (species group 12), and Panicum maximum (species group 21).

I was actually looking for Eragrostis trichophora - Sporobolus stapfianus. Seeing that Imberbe got close to the correct answer,   he is IT!

This grass is named after a fish in English and an agricultural implement in Afrikaans. It is a hardy grass with the function of colonizing disturbed areas. It is not nutritious and is avoided by animals. It has a striking and very typical growth form.

Herringbone Grass - known as Sekelgras (a sekel is a sickle) in Afrikaans - is a hard, unpalatable grass that colonises disturbed areas such as roadsides and cultivated lands, and is used sometimes to make brooms.

This is a well-known Southern African grass, that is widespread in Africa and Australia. It is blue-green with a pink tinge, and becomes redder as it ages. It is palatable, fire-resistant, and a good indicator of healthy veld when present. Is used as a thatching, ornamental, and grazing grass. Which grass?

Easy one...

I am unique, as I am used to control erosion, soil stabilization, pollution control, etc.
I thrive in the tropics and semi tropics, hot summers and where the earth is not permanently frozen in winter.
I improve shear strenght of the soil by a third to almost a half.
It is said that I have nails.

Which grass type am I?
