Reserche showed that sperm cells from the more promiscuous chimpanzee and rhesus macaque species swim much faster and with much greater force than those of humans and gorillas.

Interesting quizz everyone, I'm not big into quizzes but this one seems very educational so maybe I should try a few answers here as well!

Some females can be very hard to please! (Hey Theuns! :slap: )

In certain bird species the males need to convince the female not only by having incredibly beautiful feathers, but also by doing a complicated dance. In some of these situations you will find two males involved in this dance, with only the one (being the dominant one) being able to mate.

Why would the other male partake in this dance, if he from the beginning stands no change of mating with the female?

I know this is quoted from the article, but I cannot fathom what they mean by sperm swimming with "greater force".  Faster I can understand (ever seen "Look Who's Talking"? ), but more force?? Maybe they slam into the ovum with greater impact?

Interesting Q, HF.

Now, stop hurrying IB ... he'll knock our socks off when the time is right.

It's like the askaris we get with elephants where the askari elephant keeps the dominant one company, but in this instance the askari bird is sort of a cheerleader for the dominant bird. The dominant bird specifically chooses the askari bird and allows him to be at his side because he knows the askari is not up to it and the female will choose him!! He is the better dancer and singer so to speak and he knows it!

You are correct, but the question is ... why does the other bird partake in this energy tapping activity, even when he knows that he will gain no mating opportunity?
