Bruce Bryden was the section Ranger at Mooiplaas (actually built the house on the hill). I took the H1-6 to Shingwedzi, drove past Shilayengwenya and saw the sable at the Tropic of Capricorn. Turned left on the S142- Shongololo loop and carried on until 34kms from Mooiplaas - Ntomeni Pan.

Staring at the murial makes me sleepy.... I have to stay awake!!!! I have to stay awake!!! Leaving the birds behind, I turn left and soon find myself on a highway again. Not wanting the mid morning sun in my eyes I turn right. Soon I'm turning left again and find myself getting drousy all over. There are plenty of places to stop for a nap on this route, but I want to at least see something before I dose off... Quickly the first waterhole appears on the right... nope nothing here today... and another pan on the right... again no luck!!! Wait here's a nice spot - but no there might be a leopard on the rock - don't want to look like an idiot sleeping while there's a leopard in the open. I have to get off this highway - that's it!! - a gravel road on the right. Tysie says it's been 19kms. I turn right but am immediately confronted by another junction...left/right?...left/right? Ok right then...It was a good choice - only a couple of kms down I see 2 rhinos at the dam... at last ... just a quick nap - promise!!!

Jones Dam on the Nhlanguleni? Departing from Orpen Dam?

I also thought it could be Jones se Dam from Orpen dam but 2 pointers do not match.

The first left does not lead to a highway and the first waterhole that appears on the right is actually Silolweni dam.

Coming down from the lookout the first left (at the T-junction) goes to the H10 (highway). From there it works out

Agree, but I accepted that Siloweni Dam was described as a waterhole. From there, the pan = Leeupan, the rock = either Orpen or Kruger tablets, the gravel road right = Nhlanguleni, the first junction fits the description and the distance tallies.

The mural worries me though. The only real mural of birds is at Nwanedzi, but the clues do not work out from there.

Yes Wall-E and Johan, I mixed up Orpen and N'wanetsi again... I always do that

Anyway Orpen dam was the departure point and from there it makes sense....

Turn left leaving Orpen dam onto the Orpen gravel loop. Soon you have to turn right onto the H10 highway. Left at the T-junction H1-2, another highway, towards Skukuza. Past Silolweni (dam/waterhole Johan ), past Leeupan, past Orpen Rotse and turn right after 19kms at the S36. The next juction you actually keep straight rather than turn right, but point is you keep right... a few kms on Jones se dam

Looking at the signature I can't help but think that I was born 2 or 3 generations too late!!! Staring at the riverbed below, I can see myself riding my trusted horse Tysie through the thick vegetation. Danger lurking around every corner... elephant, lion and buffalo. I see a breeding herd playing so blissfully in the cool waters of the river of sand. This is why I love this place so much. Boy! it must've been wild back then, now almost 120years ago...The sudden arrival of another car rips me from my daydream and I decide to give way, slowly making my way towards camp - only a little more than 17kms away. Mostly gravel road thankfully, only a short stretch of tar. A right turn here, then a left and then another left. I cross the low-level bridge and can smell the camp fires. As I make a last sharp turn left, I can't help but think... tonight the sky'll be clear, the stars'll be bright, camp'll be quiet... but my mind'll be busy....

Will not get closer without a map, most probably have the departure point name incorrect, but pretty sure the departure point is somewhere on the road from Letaba past Engelhard Dam going to Balule

Will wait for someone else to crack this one!
