What are the major differences between the extinct mammoth and the modern elephant?

I have listed general differences below, as there were seven Mammoth species around, and you did not indicate which mammoth you were referring to.

* Difference in protein sequence
* Tusks of elephants are smaller. Woolly mammoths, even as babies, have small tusks around the trunk; elephants don't have tusks at birth.
* Elephants have less hair than mammoths. Mammoths had a hairy coat, consisting of three layers:
• Outer guard hairs - coarse, 3’ long in places
• Underfur - thinner, shorter, 10-12" long
• Thick layer of wool next to skin - 1-3"
* Mammoth smaller ears
* The largest elephant that ever lived [as far as is known today] was huge, taller than a two-story house and almost as tall as the average telephone pole. Evolved from smaller Siberian mammoths, the Songhua River Mammoth (Mammuthus sungari) roamed Northern China and Inner Mongolia during the Middle Pleistocene about 280,000 years ago. It survived into the Late Pleistocene, but died out well before the end of the last ice age.
[However, in general, their sizes were more or less equal. Mammoths appeared bulkier because of their long hair)
* Trunk of a mammoth shorter than that of an elephant
* Mammoth's head high crowned, elephants no domes on the head.

Thanks, Elzet. :clap: :clap: I have nothing more to add - our sources must have been similar. Those are indeed the major differences between the general mammoth (ignoring interspecies differences) and the modern elephant.

Smilodon Fatalis (Wild guess... realising it was actually way, way North...) and no, no Bruce Bryden book at the moment. :?

Almost 2 weeks later and still no correct answer, so I will give the answer.

It was called Euskelosaurus and roamed there 65 million years ago
