Okay, let's ask another few questions ...

Firstly, which two planets are currently easy to see after sunset?

:clap: OWN, thank you for asking questions to help us learn more about things we (I) never thought of. :)

Venus and Saturn. Venus beams in the west at dusk, and sets roughly one and one-half hours after sunset in early September and two hours after the sun in late September (at mid-northern latitudes). Saturn shines in the southwest sky at nightfall and stays out about three hours after sunset in early September and about one and one-half hours after the sun by the month’s end.

You're absolutely welcome, Philip. :hands:

Venus and Saturn it is. Venus particularly is burning brightly at present as the "evening star", and I see her every evening on my way to work. :dance:

Next Q for our budding astronomers ...

How many stars (more or less) can a person with good vision see with the naked eye if she or he
(i) is in a large city;
(ii) is in the country away from all forms of pollution on a moonless night;
(iii) is on top of a high mountain?

I would go with:

1) Probably in the region of 150
2 & 3) probably around 2000 to 2400

I don't know if there would be that much difference being on a high mountain as compared to the country. The max would be around 2400/2500 just based on the potential stars in the sky and what we can see. I would assume some variaton between northern and southern hemisphere as well.

Come on other quizzers out there; just because you think you know very little about stars, I assure you know far more about heavenly bodies (you may dwell on the pun if you choose :twisted: ) than you imagine. So, don't google - give me a guess of how many stars you think you see if you stare up at the heavens in the city and again on a cloudless, clear night in the country. Take a guess - it is fascinating how the human brain deduces things. :hmz:
