A) Approximately how many million mature trees are there in KNP and approx how many of these are killed by elephant ?

One may think it's a long shot , a magazine article by a well known researcher quotes a figure .

I am taking an absolute wild guess, but someone has got to start it. I would think that there are on average about 2,5 mature trees per hectare, which gives us 5 million mature trees. Elephants destroy about 500 000 per year. (Give me couple of years in Kruger and I will start counting

)

Rooies , according to the article published in the magazine & attributed to this professor the figure is sustantially higher than that .

According to an article by Prof Rudi van Aarde - director of the Conservation Ecology Research Unit at the University of Pretoria and author of "Elephants : Facts and Fables" - in the winter 2011 edition of Wild card magazine I quote from page 71:

"... Elephant kill only 1% of the 594 million mature trees in Kruger ..."

that is approx. 300 mature trees per ha. and the ellies only kill about 1% of that WOW!!!! :shock:

I would have though the % would be higher.

And then SANParks have a problem if I collect a couple of hardekool stompies here and there. But thank you for the info Ndloti.

It's time to crank up this quiz again.

[b]We have always been fascinated by the migration of birds, but most of this interest has been centred on the ways in which birds navigate. One of the fundamental facets of migration that has been largely ignored involves predicting which species will be migratory and under what conditions.

We are talking here about Insectivores, Granivores and Frugifores only.
