Re: Mandleve - The tusks were the realy recognizable feature but the tear was decisive .

Re: next photo - Mafunyane , tusks touching the ground but the hole in the head from a poachers $*@#$ bullet is diagnostic .

OK Mikev - I'll have to make it harder then!!!

It is indeed Mafunyane - as you rightly point out, the long tusks (scraping the ground) and the hole in the head is an easy give-away (don't know that it was caused by a bullet though??)

Known as the irretable one - he was very shy and rarely seen by tourists as he kept away from roads and roamed the Shangoni (remote north-western) section of the park.

He had a 10cm hole that penetrated 40cm into his skull and he was also able to breath through this hole - also let rain in!!

His tusks were perfectly symmetrical and were the exact same length and weight. They were oval in cross section, giving the impression of being heavier than it was. One of the toes on his left hind foot was splayed to one side so that he left a distinctive impression, very different from other elephants.

Well done Mikev

Hi Dox,

Welcome to the forum.

Yes Duke is a legend in KNP.

Here's a thread (one of a few I think on him): DUKE

Unfortunately as you will read there - he has broken both his tusks (one in 2007 and the other in 2008)... :(

But he is still a sight to see
