Hmmm.... Um, I would say FALSE and I'll try and justify why I say so.

Okay so, herd cows, particularly the matriarch, are aggressive in terms of protecting their young and warding off anyone or anything that they deem a threat. This I would categorise as protective rather than aggressive.

Bulls on the other hand are more naturally aggressive as they have higher testosterone levels (which is directly associated with aggression), they have to physically fight each other for dominance and mating rights. Bulls in musth have an even higher testosterone level and are very irritable and aggressive, and are sparked off by even the most, seemingly insignificant, incident. This I would categorise as aggressive rather than protective.

I'm going to leave this one going for a little bit more ...

Good justification there, BF. I can see I'm going to have to explain myself soon :)

Ok, so here's what I have from notes from my game lodge management course:

Quote:
Be very careful of cows with their calves. The females are normally the more aggressive of the sexes, and are extremely protective of their calves. There will be times when a female will give no warning at all that she intends to charge. The bulls will generally give a mock charge and make an exhibition of the charge, but seldom carry it through. On some occasions, however, they will charge. A cow on the other hand will more than likely carry through on the charge. Cows have been known to charge vehicles for a couple of kilometres.

So I guess the question is open to interpretation. Because BF gave such a thought-provoking justification to his reply, I'm handing the baton over.

BF, you're it

Thanks Porridge ;)

Okay, so, True or False:

In KNP, lions tend to target buffalo and giraffe in the wet season as they are easier to spot compared to the smaller species; while zebra and wildebeest are targeted during the dry season as they congregate around rivers, dams and waterholes.

I would say false because I think Lions tend to target buffaloes and Zebras any time of year.

Thanks all who gave it a shot!

The answer is FALSE. So well done to everyone, I will give and explanation of why it is false as soon as I'm on my computer as I'm posting from my phone!

Thanks BF. I suppose we could hand the baton to Delene D, as she answered correctly first?

Thanks BF. Waiting for your explanation. We learn something new every day!

I will go for it:

Dassies (Hyrax) evolutionary relationships lie closer to the elephant than the rodent family. True or False??
