I saw a topic about "what are the signs that you should get to KNP soon". My sign is that I start to "browse" the map book! While doing that the other day, I worked out the minimum number of km of tar one would have to travel on from Pafuri gate (SA gate, not border gate) to Croc Bridge and Malelane. ie avoiding tar as much as possible! )

So the question is : What is the minimum number of KM one would have to spend on tar to travel from North (Pafuri Gate ) to South (croc b or malelane) ?

(rules - only using roads a normal tourist can use ie no no-entry roads or roads to bushveld camps)

My answer by 5pm !

Bushguy,

On most gate/camp distance charts, I believe the distances used are the shortest distances on tar roads.

Therefore consulting my map I get:

Pafuri Gate to Croc Bridge = 415 km
Pufuri Gate to Melalane = 444km. Not sure if this is Melalane Camp or gate, so may need another 2 or so km added to that one.

Ok, Yoda maybe I wasn't clear.

I meant : How many Km would one have to spend on tar if one was trying to avoid the tar as much as possible. ie there are sections of the park where one would have to use the tar as there is no dirt road to cover that section.

Ah, ok
It did seem to be quite an easy question to me

For that I guess I would need a map and a calculator.
Map, not here with me at work. :slap:

Hi Bushguy I got to 113 km if you can use Balule causeway and 118 km if the causeway is closed, while from Croc Bridge to Pafuri Gate you can cut it down to 22 km of tar by taking the Lebombo 4x4 route.

Thanks SG , Yoda and Philip. (sorry for the delay - Yoda , 5pm on a day  )

I get 114,8km to Malelane and 109,3 km to Croc Bridge. (using the Balule causeway , and not the Lebombo 4X4 trail! :naughty: )

I found it amazing that there was so much distance that HAD to be done on tar ! It's mostly those long stretches up north , but from Shing down there are only little bits and pieces. Avoiding the tar does however make it a very long trip!

On most gate/camp mileage graphs, I really believe this miles employed include the least miles on tar highways.

Therefore contacting my personal road My partner and i get:

Pafuri Checkpoint to help Croc Connection = 415 kilometers
Pufuri Checkpoint to help Melalane = 444km. Uncertain in the event that this is Melalane Camping as well as door, therefore could need an additional a couple of approximately kilometers combined with that particular.

Hi Christianpet , welcome to the forum.

I think you are correct (within a few km's) - the maps are never very accurate!

The question I was asking was : If one avoided tar as much as possible (drove as much on dirt as possible) what was the amount of tar that one would have to drive on (no dirt alternative).

This comes out at about 114 km as above. Obviously a lot more dirt road!

Cheers

Guy
