Wind is the movement of air over the surface of the Earth, from areas of high pressure to low pressure. Air movement or wind is due to pressure gradients from place to place balancing out the pressure.

1) the rotation of the earth

As the earth spins on its axis it drags the atmosphere round with it. However, the air higher up in the atmosphere is less affected by this dragging/stirring effect. The difference in the air speed at different levels in the atmosphere causes the air to mix, forming turbulence, which causes wind at the earth's surface.

2) the heating effect of the sun

The warming effect of the sun varies with latitude and with the time of day. Warmer air is less dense than cooler air, and rises above it, so the pressure above the equator is lower than the pressure above the poles.

Pressure gradients are caused by the variable heating of the Earth by the sun, along with the rotation of the Earth.

   Good stuff Tannie Elzet the two main causes of wind is the Coriolis effect which is the rotation effect of the Earth as well as Pressure Gradients!!!

Tannie Elzet you're IT!!!

When discussing the Earth's "Hydrologic Cycle", what exactly do we mean by "Runoff"?

I'll take a stab at it Siobain
Hydrologic Cycle or water cycle is the continuous movement of water in various forms throughout the earth, from evaporation(gas) to condensation (liquid),or frozen (solid)
As part of this cycle there is also runoff which is surface water from rain or snow 'returning' to lakes and seas to be evaporated and start the cycle over again. Runoff is also used for human and animal consumption, as it also contributes to the water table or underground aquifers etc.

Interesting fact

A discussion with a Scientist while he was in the arctic studying ice flow conditions a number of years ago, opened my eyes. I thought we had less water on the earth because of Global warming. He stated that there is the (nearly) exact same amount of water on the earth today as there was millions of years ago. The difference is the amount of 'drinkable' or fresh water left.(potable)
