Yes, I failed to appreciate the nuances of the question. Thanks, Timepilot.

I'll resuscitate my question then:

How do snowflakes form into their amazingly fluffy, complex, symmetrical shapes?

Hokay, but I do hate the stuff!!

Snow flakes shapes are determined by the crystallisation of water molecules and are affected by temperature, air currents and humidity. They would also be affected by small particles of dirt in the air. These factors would all influence the size and shape, but primarily it is the shape of the water molecule itself that provides the "classic" symmetrical snowflake shape. During crystallisation the water molecules will align themselves to provide the "tightest" bonds with the minimum amount of repulsion between the molecules. The shapes will differ usually because of the different heights that the molecules bond with the higher the cloud causing the more classic shape - depending on the factors mentioned above the snowflake shape may change during its downward journey.

I think that about sums it up :hmz:

Seems like there's only you and me on this quiz OWN - we need some other quizzers to come and join in?

Maybe we should go a little less esoteric and put up a question that relates to being in the bush?

Something like, what kind of clouds building up in the sky would make you think twice about driving out on one of the more remote gravel roads to game view?

Cumulonimbus? These are those huge, anvil-shaped thunderstorm clouds that are fueled by vigorous updrafts that travel at high speed, the tops of which can easily reach 12,000 meters in height! It might not be a good idea to be caught on a dirt road in the middle of a powerful deluge like that. I once remember a whole lot of tents being washed away in Shingwedzi after these clouds had moved over us in the late afternoon.

Welcome back OWN. Them's the ones. We flew from Durbs to Pongola one Sunday where my Dad had some work to do. As the morning wore on the cunims built up and by about 13H00 it was really bucketing down. When we went back out to the airfield (dirt strip back then) we had to wait for a while for the mud to dry out a bit otherwise we could not have taken off!

You are right, they dump a lot of water in a very short time which tends to turn gravel roads into mud pits which would make it very awkward for anyone out in a normal vehicle.

Eagerly waiting the next question

What are the three main requirements for the formation of a rainbow across the sky?

wild guess here.... :hmz:
Light
moisture (liquid)
and refraction
That aught to make a rainbow!

Moisture, yes. There obviously has to be sufficient humidity in the atmosphere to diffract the light.

The other two are based on light, more specifically the sun. What constraints in this regard affect the formation, or non-formation, of a rainbow?

:hmz: ...The sun has to be in the setting phase...when the light bends around the earth?...Of course low cloud cover would also be a factor

Well, I've also seen a morning rainbow, haven't you, Lockie? So setting phase is not strictly correct. It is more to do with the angle of the sun.
