OK, we all love those highveld winters, especially the bit where you can't see your hand in front of your face for the smog. Why does the smog blanket the way it does for a number of hours in the early morning?

"Today, most of the smog we see is photochemical smog. Photochemical smog is produced when sunlight reacts with nitrogen oxides and at least one volatile organic compound (VOC) in the atmosphere. Nitrogen oxides come from car exhaust, coal power plants, and factory emissions. VOCs are released from gasoline, paints, and many cleaning solvents. When sunlight hits these chemicals, they form airborne particles and ground-level ozone—or smog".
Smog is often worst in the mornings, when there is less air movement. :hmz:

Philip1, not quite the answer I was looking for.

Anyone else?

Especially on the Highveld, where winter is characterised by still air, a cold air layer sinks to the ground and is held in place by a warmer layer above. Winter here also results in large quantities of carbon emissions from coal-burning stoves primarily in the informal settlements, as well as the usual motor-vehicle and industrial emissions, and photochemical radicals. All of this combined results in a choking layer of cool air saturated with fine particles, which scatters sunlight and significantly reduces visibility.

I was thinking of something as mundane as a temperature inversion, but I like the way your brain thinks OWN

Are sea levels rising due to global warming, or is it all just an urban myth?

Sea levels rise due to global warming and the melting of major stores of land ice, like ice sheets and glaciers?. It is going to take a long time!

Oops, okay I'm back.

Yes, you're indeed correct, master-quizzer. Global warming - which some people still seem to think is a myth, but which has scientifically shown to be occurring at an ever-increasing rate - is causing some of the polar ice-caps and glaciers to melt. However, the rate of melting at the moment is not sufficient enough to raise the sea-levels to any visible degree. Nevertheless, the sea has risen a teeny bit since global warming began, and will indeed still take some time to show significant rise. Well done, Philip.
