Yes indeed, Philip; meteorological aerosols are mainly suspended microparticles high in the atmosphere, and if they attract water to themselves, they become small droplets. But, what effects do these particles have on current weather systems?

No, not really. Think about what large masses of particles hanging in the upper atmosphere might do in terms of the Sun's rays.

Possibly, Philip. However, meteorological aerosols also reflect incoming solar rays back into Space. Therefore, what effect would this back-reflection have on the Earth, do you think?

Yes, well done Philip.  The large amounts of particles high up in the atmosphere - which are only 1-3 thousands of a millimeter in size - and that are due to meteorological aerosols caused by fires, desert sands, sea spray, diesel fumes, and especially volcanoes, can actually reflect a large amount of heat back into Space. From 1992-1994, for example, the average world temperature dropped by half a degree Celsius after Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991! (Please note that meteorlogical aerosols really have nothing to do with man-made can aerosols, although the effect on the ozone layer of the latter's CFC's is another topic all together.)

Anyone can now post a Q ...

:? Who invented the weather vane? Is it still important in weather forecasting?

Very interesting Q, Philip. It seems that weather vanes may have been invented by the Goths and, though more modern techniques exist for weather forecasting, on a more rustic level the change of wind direction can often foretell of approching weather fronts or conditions.

Info i came across.
"While its invention cannot be traced to any one individual, the earliest recorded weather vane dates back to the first century B.C. The first American weather vane maker was Shem Drowne, who made weather vanes in the early 1700s.

Weather vanes are still important instruments in forecasting the weather. Part of forecasting future weather is knowing what is going on in the present, and that includes knowing the direction from which the wind is blowing both at the surface of the Earth and higher up in the atmosphere. Weather vanes are part of the instrument packages at surface observing stations as well as those attached to weather balloons that are launched into the atmosphere to gather data".

The Coriolis effect and pressure gradient force are the two main influences on the direction of wind. What’s the third factor in this meteorological tug-of-war?

Great Q, Philip.

The two main effects are indeed the Coriolis Effect and pressure gradients caused by temperature changes. Localised sea-land directional breezes, as well as differential heating between the equator and the poles, are also as a result of pressure gradients from thermal gradients. I'm wondering if the third effect might be due to significant geographical obstacles, such as mountains, which could alter wind directions by blocking certain paths?
