Lockie

If I might add:
Water in its chemical form does not change into another substance and, whether in solid, liquid, or gaseous, state, will always remain two-hydrogens-and-an-oxygen. In fact, water is one of the most stable compounds because of its powerful hydrogen bonds. Lightning bolts may split the water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen, but these gravitate together again and form water. Because Earth's gravitational pull is strong enough, water vapour does not escape from our planet. The result is a constant amount of water in its various forms - although, as you state, the amount of potable water changes according to various factors.

I think it is time to learn more about clouds, as we see these most days, and I've always wondered what types they are and what each type says about the prevailing weather conditions. I've never been a sailor, but I know the boating, piloting, and fishing mites are clued up on these things.

This is an OQ, so anyone can post a question ...

OK OWN, so what are Cirrus clouds and what weather will you associate them with?

Cirrus clouds are high-level, wispy clouds (Latin meaning "curl cirrus cloud of hair"). These feathery clouds form very high up in the sky (at altitudes between 5 km and 14 km) where it is very cold. They are therefore made up of tiny ice crystals rather than water droplets. Cirrus clouds are often called mare’s tails. This is because strong winds high in the air blow them into wispy curls like the tail of a horse.

High-level clouds form above 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) and since the temperatures are so cold at such high elevations, these clouds are primarily composed of ice crystals. High-level clouds are typically thin and white in appearance, but can appear in a magnificent array of colours when the sun is low on the horizon.

The most common form of high-level clouds are thin and often wispy cirrus clouds. Typically found at heights greater than 20,000 feet (6,000 meters), cirrus clouds are composed of ice crystals that originate from the freezing of supercooled water droplets. Cirrus generally occur in fair weather and point in the direction of air movement at their elevation. Often however, they mark the high-altitude front of an approaching depression, with rain from low-altitude stratus clouds following with 12 hours.

Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds blown by high winds into long streamers. They are considered "high clouds" forming above 6000 m (20,000 ft). Cirrus clouds usually move across the sky from west to east. They generally mean fair to pleasant weather.

Nice Q OWN

Dew Point or Dew Point temperature is the temperature at which the liquid and gas phases of of the water in the air are at equilibrium and, more colloquilly if the temperature drops slightly from this point it is the point at which dew will form. It is also a measure of the saturation of the air and would be classified as 100% relative humidity.

So, apart from the obvious considerations regarding corrosion, as humans this is the point of most discomfort to us, especially if the dew point temperature is high - we sweat to cool down, but if the air is saturated the sweat will just sit on the body and offer no relief. Experienced this in spades yesterday!!

Thanks, TP!  Spot on there. That was what I was looking for! Sorry to hear you're experiencing what we experience in Durban during summer. It is indeed highly unpleasant, and frequent showers and ingested cold liquids are required, although these are only a temporary solution!

What are meterological aerosols, and why are they important?
