Good Q, Philip.

Pollen sticks to the many hairs on a bee as they brush through the flowers, but the primary mechanism that allows the pollen to stick to the hairs is static electricity. The bee generates a magnetic field via its movements and this causes a static-attraction force that holds the pollen in place.

OWN :great: Well answered!

"Bees collect pollen when they rub against the stamen on which they are feeding. The pollen is sticky and this, combined with a small electrostatic charge that is caused by the fuzzy hair on the bee's body, causes it to stick to the bee. Some pollen will be carried between plants like this, simply affixed to different parts of the bee's anatomy by chance, but female bees also deliberately arrange pollen on their bodies".

True or False?

a) A praying mantis's sex can be distinguished because the male has six segments on his underside while the female has eight.
b) Large praying mantises can eat rodents.
c) In the wild, mating male praying mantises get eaten by the female almost 90% of the time.
d) A praying mantis cannot tell which direction a sound comes from.
e) The life span of most praying mantises is around three years.

a) A praying mantis's sex can be distinguished because the male has six segments on his underside while the female has eight.
False: Male = 7 and Female = 5
b) Large praying mantises can eat rodents.
True: They eat prey of a significantly larger size such as lizards, birds and even rodents.
c) In the wild, mating male praying mantises get eaten by the female almost 90% of the time.
False: After mating, most males jump off of the female and usually make a run for it. In the wild, they would have no problems escaping without harm as they are usually much faster than the females and most of them can fly.
d) A praying mantis cannot tell which direction a sound comes from.

True: Because of only one ear.
e) The life span of most praying mantises is around three years.
False: The expected life span of a praying mantis depends on the species, but maximum is about a year for the entire life cycle.

:slap:

We have all heard of bed bugs, but there is also a group of insects very similar in appearance known as bat bugs that feed primarily on bat blood, but also sometimes humans. What is particularly odd and unique about these insects?
