Egg, larva, chrysalis and adult.

Correct! ..."The butterfly has four stages in its life cycle. Like all insects the first stage is the egg. After about one week, the egg hatches and the second stage, the larva or caterpillar, begins. After about three weeks and several molts the third stage begins. This third stage is called the chrysalis and is a dormant stage. The caterpillar sheds its skin one last time to form into a chrysalis. After about two weeks, an amazing transformation takes place as the adult butterfly forms inside the chrysalis. Finally the fourth stage, the adult, emerges from the chrysalis, dries its wings and flies away".

In return for the sugar rich honeydew that the ants receive from the aphid, the ants provide protection from would be predators. Some aphid-farming ants will even transport the aphids to a new plant if the current plant is depleted of high quality nutrients.

Thanks Phillip!

Seals, humans and birds have been well documented in their use of stars (celestial cues) for navigation and orientation. Recently however, the first insect to display this behaviour was sucsessfully demonstrated by a group of South African and Swedish scientists. What is this insect and what main "grouping" of stars do they use to navigate?

Correct Phokojwe! Dung beetles have been found to orientate using both the visible and polarised light produced by the milky way. They are unable to distinguish individual stars but rather utilise the spectrum of light produced. A really interesting experiment was conducted to come to this conclusion! It is short so worth a read. I have placed a link to the PDF below.

I thought it was rats (rodents) that were the main trasnmitter for black plague but if I could think of an insect than it is the fleas/lice on the rats... :hmz:
