I think its time for a quiz about... Geology!!

Geology is the science of the composition, structure and history of the earth.

So lets start with a fairly simple one...

How are igneous rocks formed and give two examples of these type of rocks...?

Igneous rocks are formed by cooling molten material, lava or magma eg diamonds and quartz, shale

Oddesy, yes, the rocks are formed in this way... but, diamond and quartz are examples of minerals, not rocks, and shale is a sedimentary rock, which is made up of geological materials that have been compacted together...

Both diamonds (they are found in kimberlites) and quartz are minerals found in igneous rocks, but examples of igneous rocs are granite and basalt

Ok, here goes…

Quartz is usually glassy, but sometimes it contains impurities which give it different colours. These quartz varieties have different names, of which some are used as semi-precious stones.

The question is: Name 5 of the different quartz varieties

One is "pink quartz"?? I think??

Amethyst??? Flint???

Rose quartz
Tigers eye
Amethyst
Agate
Jasper
Onyx

Well done mikev, you have correctly named 5 of the quartz varieties.
And cc, amathyst are quartz, but flint is a type of chert, which are a rock type and not quartz.

In Kruger National Park some of the oldest continental rocks are exposed , which is equaled only at a few places elsewhere , so these are important .

1. Name these 5 kinds of rocks ?

2. What geological era do they come from , and their approximate age in million years ?

3. Which two general areas will you find them in ?
Give as many landmarks as you wish where they can be found by way of illustration .

Question 1 and 2 I dont have answers for, but as for question 3...

I do know that the kopies around the Phalaborwa gate area are of some geological significance.

A clue is probably called for , in case the question is too obtuse !

Jacana publish their map and companion GAME RESERVE GUIDE , FIND IT etc. with
a list of numbered geological (and historical ) landmarks . That's where you will find the answers .

Just a note here:

Please try and keep the quiz simple. A complicated quiz tends to leave the average forumite cold and only the experts active. Which gets boring after a while ...

Because geology is not a subject many people have much knowledge about, it is especially important in this quiz.
