Granite is close , so here is a clue to get this quiz to bed.

The rock type at Augrabies is the metamorphic equivalent of the igneous granite .

A medium grained granitic rock with a gneissic texture, IOW, granite that was altered by heat. The main minerals are large pinkish feldspar crystals, glassy quartz and black mica. Is this more what you had in mind?

Have you ever seen on the map that there is greenstone in the area, and not a green rock is to be seen?
What is greenstone, why was it named as such, and what is special about it?

Darn, I wish I knew more about geology! I saw some specimens of greenstone in the botanical gardens in Jo'burg, and I seem to remember that one of them had a green tinge, but the others didn't.

I seem to remember that greenstone was so named because of the green tinge the rock (supposedly) caused by, I think, some metal chloride. I know they are associated with granite outcrops and I've read that there is one belt somewhere in the Barbeton area of SA, close to Kruger.

Hi OWN
Greenstone Belts occur as belts of deformed volcanic and sedimentary strata and get their name from the presence of green minerals (Actinolite, amphiboles,Chromium muscovite “fuchsite”, epidote, green chlorite and serpentine).
These ancient rocks are among the oldest in the World. The Barberton Greenstone belt is one of the oldest and best exposed Archaean greenstone belts on Earth and is almost 3.5 billion years old.

OWN: Very good general direction.
Skilly: Excellent, just what the doctor ordered.

A must have if you're interested in geology is "Geological Journeys" by Nick Norman and Gavin Whitfield.

Please note that this book carries a health warning:
If you do not have a tame geologist on board, budget for a few extra hours for your trip.
If you do have the tame geologist.... add a few more

Skillie, next one please!

A tame geologist? A TAME GEOLOGIST!

KEPs I am sorry to dissapoint you but if you think you have a tame geologist, it is actually the other way around. You are the one who are well trained to stop at the right outcrops

By the way. KEPs, you asked why greenstone doesn't sometimes appear as green: why is this please?
