The S39, or Timbavati road, near Roodewal Private camp.

In the early days, (+- the 1950s) there were areas demarcated as hippo pools in Kruger. An armed ranger used to take you down to the river in a party to view the hippos, just as he still does on the S27 (near Crocodile Bridge). My question is: A) How many of these hippo pools were there and B) Can you name where they all were situated.

Hi Chip. that's a good question (questions) Unfortunatey I don't have an answer for you, I was very young and only went to Kruger first time in 1986. I didn't know what I was missing until then! I hope someone will know the answers.

Hi Delene D, I believe that my questions are a little tough as my trips to Kruger started in the 1940's and my first map, showing the hippo pools, won't have been seen by many. Therefore, I am going to answer the questions myself.
A) Four hippo pool demarcated areas.
B) 1 - The one still in operation on the S27 near Crocodile Bridge.
2 - On the S3, about 8 kms north of the Albisini ruins. In those days there wasn't a gate at Phabeni.
3 - At what is now known as Balule. In those days, the little camp was known as Olifantsrivier camp and
there was a hippo pool there as well.
4 - On the S64 at the Luvuvhu river was the northernmost hippo pools. I remember as a little boy in the early 50s, going to this hippo pool and finding no hippos where they were supposed to be. The guide sat on the bonnet of our car and we drove for quite a way before he told us to stop and then we had to walk along the banks of the Luvuvhu river for quite a long distance before we came across the hippos. I will try and insert a picture of the map to show where they were.

Quite a difference today, where you are likely to see hippos wherever there are more than a few drops of water.
Someone else may set a question if they like.

OK...... here's one:

How many Picnic sites are there in KNP? - excluding those at Camps!

Superb Q, PNF

It depends to some extent how you view a picnic spot - I see it as a place that has been designated for people to sit down and eat a prepared meal, and so includes toilets, tables and dirtbins. There were two that have not been officially noted down as picnic sites, yet facilities have been included (Orpen Dam, Tshange) and one that is theoretically part of a camp but is actually a short way from the camp itself (Skukuza), and so I have accepted these in the total. On the other hand, since you have excluded camps, all day-visitor areas adjoining camps have been excluded. So, I make it 16 picnic sites:

Afsaal, Albasini, Babalala, Makhadzi, Masorini, Mlondosi, Mooiplaas, Muzandzeni, Nhlanguleni, Nkuhlu, N'wanetsi, Orpen Dam, Pafuri, Punda Maria Gate Timbavati, and Tshokwane.

Great question, that certainly required a bit of research.

According to the SANParks website, Punda Maria Picnic spot is not listed as an official picnic spot and only has 15 spots listed.

Based on the reasons listed below by OWN  If you include Tshange, Orpen Dam and Punda Maria (located at the gate 8km from camp) that would bring the total to 18.

OWN, I believe you may have made a small error below... , Even though you mentioned Tshange, you have not included it in your final tally of 16 which if included should bring it to 17 ?

Thanks PK, you're on the ball.  Actually, I mentioned both Tshange and Skukuza and then didn't include them in the list   - so 18 is indeed my reckoning:

Afsaal, Albasini, Babalala, Makhadzi, Masorini, Mlondosi, Mooiplaas, Muzandzeni, Nhlanguleni, Nkuhlu, N'wanetsi, Orpen Dam, Pafuri, Punda Maria Gate, Skukuza, Timbavati, Tshange and Tshokwane.
